Welcome back to the Passport Through Texas series! We're exploring Public Health Region (PHR) 8 in South Central Texas. Did you know that TCID in PHR 8 is the only specialty tuberculosis hospital in the United States? The hospital is also a regional leader in treatment of tuberculosis and Hansen's disease ?? Last year, the Tuberculosis Program from PHR 8 helped more than 150 people. It also helped 56 people in eight different prisons. DSHS South Central Texas staff also play a big role in hurricane response ?? PHR 8 serves as the Regional Medical Operations Center (RMOC), located in San Antonio, where they help with moving patients to safety when storms hit along the Gulf Coast.
