For more than 36,000 dedicated public servants, our mission is to provide public safety, promote positive change in offender behavior, reintegrate offenders into society and assist victims of crime. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is the Lone Star State’s largest state agency and manages more than 146,000 offenders in state prisons, state jails and private correctional facilities that contract with the TDCJ. The agency also provides funding and certain oversight of community supervision and is responsible for the supervision of offenders released from prison on parole or mandatory supervision.

The Correctional Institutions Division held additional training for employees and unit leadership over the new human resources PD-21 and PD-22 modifications that focused on anti-discrimination, disciplinary, and employee conduct policies. These policies were enhanced to make them more people-centered and focused on coaching, mentorship, and more opportunities for redirection. They also promote personal and professional development in the workplace and bring the agency closer to the 2030 goal of becoming the number one employer! #TDCJ

This forum equips lieutenants to lead confidently and navigate routine and challenging situations. Through engaging discussions, scenario simulations, and performance-oriented exercises, lieutenants learn valuable skills to excel in their roles. Meet Sergeant Russel Cowan and Officer Leonard Lopez from the Stevenson Unit in Cuero?? Sgt. Cowan and Officer Lopez oversee the Kennel Tracking Canine Program and security canines at the unit, which include packs of 19 fully-grown canines and 12 puppies!???? Through their leadership, Sgt. Cowan and Officer Lopez have established a trusting bond with the animals, which plays a key role in keeping the inmates, staff, and surrounding community safe. As part of the program, Sgt. Cowan and Officer Lopez also help inmates learn how to properly train the young pack of pups who will go on to serve and protect other Texas communities. Thank you for all that you do, Sgt.
