The Medical Laboratory Science Program prepares students for a career in Medical Laboratory Science and the #MedicalLaboratory. For admission to the program, visit our website or call our program office. The Profession The medical laboratory scientist, sometimes known as a medical technologist, or clinical laboratory scientist, plays a major role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Medical laboratory scientists use sophisticated laboratory instruments to perform tests in microbiology, immunology, immunohematology, hematology, and clinical chemistry. Major Texas State University offers a four year curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018, (773) 714-8880. Graduates are eligible for the certification examination as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) of the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent. The requirements during the first two years of study include courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics along with courses in the humanities and social and behavioral sciences. The junior and senior years combine clinical experiences in the affiliated clinical laboratories with advanced academic study in the MLS disciplines. Since class size is limited due to the availability of space in the clinical affiliates, admission to the program is competitive and all who apply will not be accepted. Complete the MLS Admissions Module to apply or get more information. Careers The medical laboratory scientist has a broad background in the sciences and may find employment in hospital and clinic laboratories, public health laboratories, and research laboratories. With experience, the medical laboratory scientist becomes an indispensable top level laboratory worker, a supervisor, a specialist, a researcher, or an educator.

Our thanks for the invitation to come speak with the Texas State University College of Science and Engineering, Texas State University - Department of Biology - #Microbiology Student Club on Thursday, March 20, 2025! Professor Autumn Vela joined our junior #MedicalLaboratory Science major Skyler Jade Ramdeen to discuss our Medical Laboratory Science [MLS] major with students in the microbiology club. Specifically, Professor Vela shared her expertise in #hematology. Hematology is the study of?blood and blood disorders. Hematologists and hematopathologists are highly trained healthcare providers. They specialize in diseases of the blood and blood components. These include blood and bone marrow cells. Hematological tests can help diagnose anemia, infection, and hemophilia. A MLS professional major will learn and become competent in four core areas of the medical laboratory - hematology, blood bank [immunohematology], diagnostic / medical microbiology, and clinical chemistry. Students completes their 2y of coursework in the junior/senior year, while also spending 6 months of the senior year in various hospital medical labs, reference labs, and other clinical labs in central Texas. Upon graduation, they sit for the professional credential - MLS (ASCP) - which allows them to be employed in a medical laboratory. The Texas State University #txst Texas State University - College of Health Professions MLS Program is excited to announce our CONGRATULATIONS to our junior MLS major, Patricia Garza Patricia was notified recently that she was selected for the prestigious honor of the Houston Methodist 2025 Summer Undergraduate Research Internship! CC: Houston Methodist Summer Operations Internship Program Due to her academic excellence, research interest, and commitment to a health care career, the selection committee shared that she makes a wonderful candidate for this program, and they are grateful that Patricia chose Houston Methodist to be a part of her professional and educational journey. The Summer Undergraduate Research Internship (SURI) is the premier summer program at the Houston Methodist Academic Institute. This 10-week internship offers undergraduate students a rich array of opportunities to enhance their professional development and gain exposure to careers in translational research. Interns are paired with distinguished faculty mentors from Houston Methodist, who provide guidance in mastering essential laboratory techniques and research processes. Each intern is assigned their own area of study or focus within an ongoing project, allowing for in-depth exploration of their research interests. Throughout the summer, interns participate in a variety of activities, including a welcome reception, sporting events, didactic and professional development sessions, all of which contribute to their professional growth and expand their network. The program concludes with a research symposium where interns present poster presentations of their work. Some interns, in collaboration with their mentors, may even have the opportunity to publish their work, and many are discovering potential career pathways at Houston Methodist. Stipends are provided for undergraduate interns. ??Patricia, to my knowledge, is the FIRST Texas State University student to be chosen for this extremely competitive honor and award. Please join us in congratulating her and sharing in her fantastic work and effort to achieve this goal. The university will feature Patricia in a News Story announcement after she completes the internship. Congratulations again Patricia! We are SO PROUD of you!
