I happened to pull up our safety policy this morning and when reading the closing paragraph (see below) I thought about how easy it is to lose focus this time of year. With the holiday season upon us it is easy to get distracted and to let some of our focus go to planning for your Thanksgiving get together or thinking about your when you can get your Christmas decorations out. It is a good time to remind all employees that as wonderful as the holiday season is for each of us - it is so very important to stay present in the moment and be mindful of yours and your coworker's safety. No one wants to get hurt and spend the holidays injured or under medical care. Using the IC Process to save time and money - 2 This is part 2 of a multi-part series about using the investment casting process to save time and money and/or add value. Notes: Cast-in machine locators TPM always wants to better understand how a part is used – form, fit, function, etc.?In this way we can work with our customer to best use the advantages of the Investment Casting Process to add the most value to a part. An example is to cast in features used to more precisely hold and locate the part for machine setup.??By understanding how the part is used TPM can suggest ideas on how to make any machining required faster and easier. Other reasons to cast in locators would be for a welding fixture, paint fixture or assembly fixture.??Often a feature can be cast into the part without affecting functionality, this will locate the part in a fixture in the same manner each time.???Even if the parts are cast near net size subsequent setups can be reduced or simplified. TPM is able to cast slots, pockets and several other shapes into parts to create a consistent/repeatable fixturing point.??The photo shows some typical examples. The end result is that TPM is able to provide parts to our customer with cast features that reduce machine or fixture set up time.

Some quick conversations led to TPM suggesting a sand cast part that TPM would supply via our offshore partner foundry.???Since we have worked with our partners to understand the importance of lean manufacturing techniques and the need to be able to make parts in small quantities this fit well. TPM then retains full responsibility for all quality, communications, logistics and technical development making this an easy transition.??Moving to the sand casting cut our customers costs more than in half and reduced lead times and assured consistent lead times. Our customer has a nicer looking part with cast-in lettering for less cost and better lead times.??This is an example of TPM adding value through our collaboration with the customer and our resources via our offshore partners.
