On Thursday, the Texas Water Development Board will consider adopting the first-ever State Flood Plan. This is a major milestone for the state, and an important step forward to protect nearly 5 million Texans who live in floodplains. We applaud the Texas Water Development Board for its efforts to seek input from regional flood planning groups representing diverse stakeholders from across the state. We also look forward to continuing to work on educational and engagement opportunities to ensure that the plan prioritizes climate resilience and equitable solutions for all Texans. From housing to energy and farming, our water resources are crucial for healthy and thriving communities. In their new issue,?Texas Monthly?takes a deep dive into the future of water in Texas, as our population continues to grow and climate impacts like drought get worse. Keep reading to hear more from Jennifer Walker, director of our program, on why Texas cities need to start investing in fixing leaky pipes. https://lnkd.in/dXw_Q7GG

Last year, TNC and Texas Living Waters released a report about Texas' water markets and environmental transactions, thanks to the support of The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation. We’re excited to have helped expand this research with a new paper that further explores trends, drivers, and future potential for water markets in Texas. ?? Check out the new paper, published in Ecological Economics: https://lnkd.in/g9mxU_d6 ?? Download the original report: https://lnkd.in/gARjbX5p
I’m thrilled to share that the second paper from my PhD is now published in Ecological Economics! If you’re interested in: #water scarcity #water markets #Texas water You may find something in here for you! We illustrate how different basins have different “signatures” of water transactions, i.e. different mixes of drivers and patterns of trade, which have implications for policy. Like most scientific pursuits, there was a team behind it, so many thanks to: Kyle Garmany Eugenio Arima Dustin Garrick Additionally, we had early conversations and support for this work with Emily Raquel Warren Armitano Robert E. Mace Carlos Rubinstein and countless others along the way. https://lnkd.in/eU_Zpifc cc Anne Z. Tom Iseman

Read more about our new report, Climate Resilient Galveston, in Axios Houston! Galveston is uniquely vulnerable to sea level rise, warming water temperatures, and other climate impacts. Arsum Pathak, lead author of the report, explains how nature-based solutions can build resilience and are often more cost-effective and easier to build than large scale infrastructure projects like the Ike Dike. ?? In 2022, after a beach renourishment project was completed in Galveston, researchers found a special visitor. The endangered and rare Kemp's Ridley Turtle, was spotted on Babe's Beach. There had been no previous sightings of the turtle in the area before this. ?? The beach renourishment project is an example of how nature-based solutions can create added benefits for people and wildlife. ?? Hurricane season is upon us ??? Climate change is super-charging these natural disasters, and Galveston Island is particularly vulnerable to the extremes that may soon become our new normal. For example, the island is also experiencing the fastest rates of rising sea levels in the U.S. How do we protect communities from these threats? Nature-based solutions can provide cost-effective, locally appropriate strategies to build resilience. For example, Galveston Island’s wetlands can absorb more than 300 million cubic meters of stormwater during a hurricane. Climate Resilient Galveston, a new report from the National Wildlife Federation, provides local leaders and stakeholders a foundation to implement nature-based solutions. ??
