When Cox Media Group spun off from its parent company Cox Enterprises in 2019, it faced an all-too-common challenge: how to efficiently manage its legal operations in an increasingly complex business environment.
For Eric D. Greenberg, who joined the company as general counsel in 2021, this wasn’t just about putting out fires, it was about building a legal team that could function as a strategic partner to the business.
Fortunately, Greenberg found his secret weapon already in the department: legal operations manager Letitia Haynes-Frasier.?Over the next few years, their collaboration turned a fragmented legal unit into a model of efficiency, earning Cox Media the 2024 Best Legal Ops Team Award from?Corporate Counsel.
One of Greenberg and Haynes-Frasier’s most significant achievements was implementing a centralized contract management system using NetDocuments. Before this system, Cox Media relied on a patchwork of legacy processes, creating inefficiencies and legal risks. Greenberg recalled how the company’s chief financial officer initially raised concerns about the lack of visibility in contract management.
“The CFO worried that we were losing sight of historical contract data. Letitia quickly recognized this as an opportunity to streamline our entire process,” Greenberg said.
Haynes-Frasier took charge of the initiative, repurposing NetDocuments, the software the company was already using for other legal documents. This approach saved Cox Media significant costs compared with adopting a new platform from scratch.
“We built a dedicated contract management cabinet within the existing system,” Haynes-Frasier explained. The results were immediate: the new system saved Cox Media more than $300,000 in fees, reduced legal risk, and enabled attorneys to focus on high-value work rather than administrative tasks.
