Thrive Humanitarian Initiative just packed 300 healthcare supply bags for the less fortunate in our community! Let’s briefly talk about the importance of discussing and inculcating ideas of civic responsibility in our communities, especially among youths. Many of us are unhappy with certain aspects of society. We see people living in conditions we don’t wish for them. We want to help but, at the same time, we’re caught up in our own careers, families, and hobbies. Some of us donate or volunteer. Yet, these issues in society persist. Please excuse my naivety—I’m still new to this—but in my opinion, if our goal is prevention, it’s in our best interest to start these discussions with young adults. If we can all collectively develop a passion for community service from a young age, then our individual and collective impact will be so much greater once we’re well-established in our lives and careers. However, I feel just exposing teens and young adults to volunteering is not enough—especially if they’re only doing it because of a volunteering hour quota for some certificate or grade. Don’t get me wrong; it’s a great way to introduce students to community service. But I personally didn’t develop a service-oriented interest this way. I collected over 100 hours of volunteering in high school. I knew what I was doing was for a greater good, but I was really just there to do what I was told. It didn’t click for me how many people were benefiting from the orgs I was volunteering at. What I needed to understand was that I, individually, could apply myself to make an impact. By making volunteering engaging and encouraging people to think creatively about how they can make a bigger impact, I’ve noticed a lot of them start opening up to discussions. Many students come back for the next event because they feel their ideas are valued. Creative individuals coming together make a powerful team! At THI, our goal isn’t to solve the world’s problems. We just want to do the best we can and empower others to take initiative. #communityservice #volunteering #dfw
