Today, we had the privilege of honoring fallen DPS Senior Trooper Richard Cottle with the dedication of a Tactical Marine Unit in his name. Trooper Cottle faithfully served the people of Texas before losing his life in the duty on May 9, 2001, after a four-vehicle wreck in McLennan County. It was an honor to be surrounded by Trooper Cottle’s family and friends at today’s dedication ceremony. Trooper Cottle’s memory lives on in the hearts of everyone at DPS, and this marine unit serves as a permanent, lasting symbol of his enduring legacy at the department. Throughout his career, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw has worked to ensure the highest of standards — including when it comes to improving the safety of DPS personnel who protect and serve the people of Texas. As we continue to honor a lifetime of service, today Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee recounts a decision by Director McCraw that has undoubtedly saved lives — the switch to an all-SUV patrol fleet.

Later this year, Director Steven McCraw will retire from the Texas Department of Public Safety after 15 years of steadfast leadership. As we continue to honor his legacy, we hear from Lt. Colonel Jason Taylor about the Director’s well-known compassion for the people and families of those who serve this great state.

Important changes are coming to the way you register your vehicle in Texas. Beginning January 1, 2025, many Texans will no longer need to get a vehicle safety inspection. Instead, non-commercial vehicles will be subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee that you'll pay when you register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Additionally, a select number of counties will still require emissions tests, which drivers will need to complete prior to their vehicle registration.
