Green schoolyards provide access to nature-based learning areas for children. These areas are living ecosystems that contribute to sustainability, environmental education, and climate resilience. The Reilly Elementary School project, in Austin, Texas, is a site where people can see, touch, and evaluate different green infrastructure practices. These practices include 12 cisterns of various sizes, 5 rain gardens, and other infiltration systems that improve stormwater runoff. Felix Landry often recommends cities approach land use planning like an investment portfolio. While multi-family development generally yields higher returns than single-family, data shows strategic single-family development can also be profitable. Cities can leverage both for optimal fiscal performance. See the graph posted in the comments ?? illustrating tax revenue per acre for over?4.1 million single family and over 70,000 multi-family properties in Texas. #urbanplanning #cityfinance #charm #communityplanning #realestatedevelopment

Tim Jenkins of Langford Community Management Services (LCMS) attended a CHARM (www.communitycharm.org) workshop and had an enriching experience: “The success of the recent workshop in Caldwell County validates CHARM's crucial function in bridging urban development with hazard mitigation. The Planning Team and the tool have proven essential in providing real-time, data-driven insights that support informed decision-making and strategic planning, crucial for areas vulnerable to natural hazards. Moreover, LCMS values CHARM's ability to foster regional cooperation and promote high standards in development practices, particularly in stormwater management and broader community development initiatives. The platform's effectiveness in aiding the City of Martindale to navigate and implement enhanced development standards, despite legislative hurdles, underscores its importance in reinforcing local and regional resiliency strategies.” #charm #communityplanning #communityhealth

Wangari Maathai (pronounced waang·gaa·ree muh·thai), a Kenyan environmentalist, was known for her work promoting environmental education, empowerment, and human rights. Maathai sought to end the loss of Kenya’s forests and lands caused by development and the negative impact it had on the country. In 1977, she launched the Green Belt Movement to restore forests in her beloved country while also helping the nation’s women. This organization focused on climate resilience, reversing environmental degradation that led to poverty and conflict, and planting trees to reduce soil erosion, enhance rainwater sequestration, and provide food and firewood. Her efforts resulted in the planting of over 50 million trees across Kenya and other parts of Africa. Due to her contributions to environmentalism, peace, and democracy, Maathai became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Despite facing challenges, including imprisonment and political opposition, Maathai remained a strong voice for the environment and social change. ??Read more about her legacy here: https://lnkd.in/dMv4QSV ??View this inspiring video featuring Wangari Maathai, encouraging what we can do in the face of seemingly interminable odds: https://lnkd.in/gvmeXGrF #Blackhistorymonth #conservation #WangariMaathai
