Getting Texas Tough… Fraud, in its many forms, has become an epidemic. As the new financial capital of America, Texas is fighting back and the Texas Bankers Association is proud to play a leading role in protecting bank customers, small businesses and senior citizens. Thank you to TBA Chairman Jan Mills of First National Bank of Winnsboro, Jessica Pelache of First National Bank Texas, Jamie Burud of Stellar Bank, and Lin Bearden of Texas Bank. They testified before the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee in support of four TBA-backed bills to fight financial crime.?SB 1499 by Senator Robert Nichols will help expand the work of the Texas Financial Crimes Intelligence Center (FCIC) which is doing nationally recognized work to target and pursue organized financial criminals. SB 1281 by Senator Tan Parker creates a specific offense for mail theft-related check fraud and theft of universal mail keys. Criminal Justice Committee Chairman Pete Flores filed two bills that will strengthen criminal penalties for check fraud, increasing both forgery penalties and the penalty for stealing or receiving a stolen check, SB 1379 and SB 1451. All four bills were approved unanimously by the committee and sent to the full Senate for action. Thank you to community bank leaders for your testimony, to Capt. Jeff Headley of FCIC for your expertise, and to Sens. Nichols, Parker and Chairman Flores for this “Texas Tough” package of bills! ? ?
