Steve Davis has lived in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, for 58 years, and he is a survivor of the tornadoes that tore through his town two weeks ago. The storm system sirens went off three times before Steve, his son and his dog took shelter in the laundry room to wait out the tornado. They didn’t hear any loud noises as the tornado passed over, but they were met with devastation the second they stepped outside after it was gone. “It was just a mess,” said Steve. “Kind of a war zone. It was a miracle we weren’t injured.” Texans on Mission volunteers were able to start work on Steve’s home a mere two days after the tornadoes. “Praise the Lord,” said Steve. “You guys got up here quickly to help this area, and that’s a blessing. You’re doing a wonderful job, and we’re glad to have you here.” Thanks to your prayers and support, TXM volunteers are able to provide help, hope and healing to people like Steve in Missouri. Texans on Mission flood recovery teams are on standby to serve following severe storms and devastating flooding in the lower Rio Grande Valley. As this system moves across the southern part of Texas, there is a chance for more flooding to occur. Texans on Mission fire recovery teams are working day in and day out to help Oklahomans after wildfires overtook more than 100,000 acres and 400 homes. In Stillwater and Mannford, TXM volunteers are sifting through the ash remains of homes to help homeowners recover personal belongings that survived the fire. On the first day, teams found jewelry that had been passed down as well as a sabre a son had from the Air Force. Work like this is so important. We’re grateful for the volunteers actively working to restore hope in those who feel like they have lost just about everything. Update: 59 volunteers and five days later, southeast Missouri residents are receiving physical and spiritual relief at the hands of Texans on Mission volunteers. Work has just begun in Poplar Bluff and divine appointments are already taking place. In the midst of the devastation, volunteers are helping impacted residents heal in more ways than one. “I watched the Lord, with our ministry, wrap arms around these people,” said Jacob Moneybrake, TXM’s associate director of disaster relief. TXM chainsaw teams have much to tackle while deployed in Missouri. Big things happened in South Padre this spring break! For the last two weeks, Beach Reach has shared the Gospel to spring breakers in hopes of leading them to Christ. Texans on Mission volunteers had the opportunity to make pancakes for those in the area while beach reachers initiated these spiritual conversations. Within the first week, there were 138 new believers on the island and 46 recommitments. What a blessing it is to be a part of this ministry. Texans on Mission units rolled out to Texas Hill Country and southeast Missouri this morning to begin providing relief after the Crabapple fire and severe tornadoes. Shower/laundry and bunkhouse units will serve the firefighters working tirelessly to put out more than 9,500-acres of fire near Fredericksburg, Texas. An incident management team and a team of assessors will also begin evaluating the need in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, after the deadly tornadoes. Chainsaw, feeding, electronics, asset protections, laundry units and chaplains will deploy to Missouri later this week to begin providing relief where it is most needed. Texans on Mission Church Builders and students from First Baptist Hempstead made a pretty good team this spring break! The Church Builders are converting a covered patio into enclosed space for Bible study and other ministries at Covenant Fellowship in Huntsville, Texas, and high school and college students helped with the project. Covenant Fellowship emphasizes community ministry, and worship attendance has grown from about 120 to almost 400. According to senior pastor David Valentine, they are out of classroom space because of how the church is growing. Once the Church Builders finish, the new space will be used throughout the week for ministries, such as Celebrate Recovery, for those dealing with addictions, and other Bible studies and activities.
