? | DID YOU KNOW? Auckland households have different patterns of infrastructure spending when compared to the rest of New Zealand. These could reflect different use of infrastructure services as well as differences in the cost to service Auckland with infrastructure. ? While there are similarities in spending patterns, there are some key differences: ?? - Auckland households spend a smaller share on private transport (52% of total infrastructure spending compared with 55%) and a larger share on public transport (11% vs 6%). This may reflect different patterns of driving and public transport use in Auckland. ? - Auckland households spend less on energy than non-Auckland households (13% on electricity and 2% on household fuels, compared with 15% and 3% elsewhere in the country). This may reflect slightly lower electricity prices in Auckland, as well as lower usage due to smaller average house sizes. Earlier this year, we published a report looking at how Auckland is different to the rest of New Zealand when it comes to infrastructure. Earlier this month we published a report that looked at how insurance can help us decide if, when and by how much to invest in infrastructure adaptation or resilience. The research uses case studies to explore the choices we have on how to respond to proactively manage risks from natural hazards. We’re hosting a webinar this Friday to explore this research in more depth. The webinar will be held on 21 February at 11am. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. ?? RESEARCH | Our new research shows how insurance can help us to manage natural hazard risks and choose how to prepare infrastructure for a changing climate. Not only is the likelihood and size of events such as storms expected to grow in coming years, but the replacement cost of infrastructure is growing too. Public infrastructure is now worth 70% more that it was in 1990. So, the cost of replacing it after a natural disaster is rising at the same time as the likelihood of a disaster is rising. It’s more important than ever to make good decisions. The report,?Invest or insure? Preparing infrastructure for natural hazards,?looks at how insurance can help us decide if, when and by how much to invest in infrastructure adaptation or resilience. The research explores the choices we have on how to respond to proactively manage risks from natural hazards. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gutRjM6S We're hosting a webinar to explore this research and give you an opportunity to ask questions. The webinar will be held at at 11am on 21 February. ??? | Our latest story from New Zealand’s infrastructure past, explores the history of Auckland’s harbour bridge. Completed in 1959, the bridge soon struggled to keep with demand. Fortunately, it was able to be widened, with so-called clip-on lanes added a decade later. ? It’s a story that shows the challenges of planning for the long term, and the importance of allowing for change and adaptability in the future. An important lesson for the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga as we work to develop a National Infrastructure Plan. #Infrastructure #History #Auckland #Bridge #Video
