    During my 14-year career in legal marketing, I've: - worked for the country's biggest legal marketing agency; - helped build a boutique legal marketing agency; - sold marketing to law firms and - invested in marketing on behalf of law firms.     The two most common questions asked when the firms I speak with bring up the topic of LinkedIin. ???????????????? ?? How do we get our lawyers to post if they don't want to? ???????????? You don't ???????????????? ?? We're concerned that if an attorney at the firm builds a personal brand and large following, they might leave the firm. How do we avoid that? ???????????? Treat them well and pay them accordingly. ?????????? ????????????-???? ???????????????? ?? But what if they still leave, and we lose out on all the business they were generating? ???????????? You can't expect to keep all the benefits of said personal brand without carrying any of the risks. That's how this goes. It might be a tough pill to swallow.     There will always be doubters, haters, and non-believers. I can count on more than both hands the number of times a firm says they found or discovered me on LinkedIn but insists it won't 'work' for them. Social media 'works' for different people and different businesses in different ways. In my experience, too many knock it before actually trying it. What you put in is what you'll get out of it. If you maintain consistency and engage thoughtfully, you'll gain traction. You will eventually start to see 'results.' But if you just wing it without a strategy or clear understanding of what you're trying to accomplish, it's gonna be uphill sledding. If that's your approach, my advice is to simply not do it. Instead, spend the limited time you have somewhere else on something you enjoy. Similar to yesterday's post about the long-term nature of SEO investments, the same thing applies here. Success doesn't happen over night. But nine times out of ten, whenever I speak with someone who's put in their reps, they always wish they had started earlier.?     "Half the legal marketing agencies we spoke with told our firm to invest in SEO, and the other half told us to run as far away as possible. What do we do?" It comes down to everyone's favorite answer. It depends. And I can't possibly list all the variables you'd need to consider before making a decision that's best for your firm's unique situation. But what I can tell you is this...you're being silly (borderline delusional) if you expect results overnight.? Yet, year after year, countless firms get sold on performance guarantees and promises of record-breaking results that never come to fruition. They continue to expect results similar to those of other firms that have invested in SEO for years or over a decade. That's just not realistic. It'd be like going to the gym for the first time - ever - expecting to walk out with a 6-pack. Not gonna happen. But notice, I didn't say that you can't pick up quick wins. Or low-hanging fruit that will make improvements in short order. Just don't expect something entirely game-changing. SEO is a long-term investment. Results don't happen overnight.     There comes a point in a law firm's growth journey where building an internal marketing team makes sense. The challenge is making sure these resources are set up for success. If your firm has reached this point, and the list of job responsibilities for Marketing Coordinators, or even Marketing Managers, looks or resembles anything close to this... -SEO -Paid ads -Market research -Intake operations -Marketing strategy -Internal communications -External communications -Social media management -Coordinating charitable efforts -Negotiating with third-party vendors ...you are setting them, and the marketing of your firm, up for failure.     Ya know why the legal marketing industry deserves its bad rap? Here's two examples of feedback clients have received after speaking with different legal marketing agencies. ?????????????? ??: Background - Personal injury firm investing an avg. of $50K/mo on Ads targeting MVA cases. Their monthly case volume benchmark/target was 22 cases (which carried an ACV of $30K). The incumbent was exceeding these goals. Competing Agency advised this firm their ROI 'could be improved.' ?????????????? ??: Background - DUI/Traffic firm, which had the second strongest backlink profile in their market, dominated local Map Packs (LocalFalcon scans almost entirely Green), and has an excellent reputation with the local community. They also invest a ton of time into biz dev and generate lots of referral business. Competing Agency advised them the incumbent is 'doing SEO all wrong.' They didn't guarantee results, but it was close.... Listen, can we please start to normalize telling prospects when their current agency is performing well?     A gentle reminder to any attorneys who've left established firms and taken the leap to open their own shop or join others. Update all of your online profiles accordingly. Google yourself ten ways from Sunday. Find and review every possible branded search result and ensure the new firm name, website link, e-mail, phone number, location, etc., reflects your new position. Legal directories, social media profiles, bar association websites, LinkedIn...you name it. Find them and update them as part of your first order of marketing business.
