Dr. Darshan Patel - Sexual Dysfunction and Fertility | Testicular Cancer Conference 2024 presented by Fennec Pharmaceuticals Inc hosted by UC San Diego Health At the 2024 Testicular Cancer Conference Darshan P Patel, MD addressed fertility concerns in testicular cancer survivors and strategies to optimize reproductive outcomes. KEY POINTS: Impact on Fertility: Treatment Effects: Chemotherapy and radiation can impair sperm production by targeting rapidly dividing cells, including sperm. Pre-Treatment Factors: Up to 25% of men may have reduced sperm counts even before treatment, especially with tumors larger than 4 cm. Factors Affecting Reproductive Health: Hormonal Changes: Low testosterone levels can hinder sperm production and sexual function. Sexual Dysfunction: Erectile dysfunction and ejaculation issues can impede natural conception. Psychosocial Stressors: Emotional and financial stresses can affect fertility decisions and outcomes. Just 67 days away from the World Marathon Challenge. T. Clark Gamblin, MD, MS, MBA, cancer surgeon and testicular cancer survivor is preparing to run the World Marathon Challenge? to benefit the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation and the fight against this disease. The World Marathon Challenge? is “a logistical and physical challenge to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven consecutive days.” Dr. Gamblin’s feat will kick off on January 31, 2025, in Antarctica followed by stops in Cape Town, South Africa; Perth, Australia; Dubai, UAE; Madrid, Spain; and Fortaleza, Brazil before culminating on February 6, 2025, in Miami, Florida. Most men are unaware that testicular cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men 15-44, but can strike infancy to elderly. Testicular cancer is over 95% curable when detected early. Testicular self-exams should begin at puberty and performed monthly just as women are taught for detecting breast cancer. Notice a lump, see a doctor. Awareness and early detection are key! This is my “why.” This is why I started the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation to educate the importance of awareness, monthly self-exams and early detection. My son was diagnosed with late stage testicular cancer at the early age of 13 in 2007. Jordan had a sports physical 8 weeks prior to his late stage diagnosis which it was never detected, nor did we have any information about this leading cancer in men ages 15-44, but can strike at any age. Jordan had a painless lump for 7 or 8 months, but was not aware that it could be cancer. Unfortunately, Jordan relapsed after being cancer free for 7 years and passed away June of 2016. His legacy lives on through the foundation as we continue to help make a positive impact in the fight against this disease and promote the importance of early detection through the practice of monthly self-exams.
