Just 67 days away from the World Marathon Challenge. T. Clark Gamblin, MD, MS, MBA, an internationally known cancer surgeon and testicular cancer survivor is preparing to run the World Marathon Challenge? to benefit the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation and the fight against this disease. The World Marathon Challenge? is “a logistical and physical challenge to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven consecutive days.” Dr. Gamblin’s feat will kick off on January 31, 2025, in Antarctica followed by stops in Cape Town, South Africa; Perth, Australia; Dubai, UAE; Madrid, Spain; and Fortaleza, Brazil before culminating on February 6, 2025, in Miami, Florida. Most men are unaware that testicular cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men 15-44, but can strike infancy to elderly. Testicular cancer is over 95% curable when detected early. This is my “why.” This is why I started the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation to educate the importance of awareness, monthly self-exams and early detection. My son was diagnosed with late stage testicular cancer at the early age of 13 in 2007. Jordan had a sports physical 8 weeks prior to his late stage diagnosis which it was never detected, nor did we have any information about this leading cancer in men ages 15-44, but can strike at any age. Jordan had a painless lump for 7 or 8 months, but was not aware that it could be cancer. Unfortunately, Jordan relapsed after being cancer free for 7 years and passed away June of 2016. His legacy lives on through the foundation as we continue to help make a positive impact in the fight against this disease and promote the importance of early detection through the practice of monthly self-exams. Today is 5 years since my RPLND! Having testicular cancer absolutely changed my life, for better or for worse. My opinion is that for me, it has been better despite all the scanxiety with every ache and pain, fear of recurrence, and everything else that comes with it. Without having had it, I don't know what I would be doing today. Forever grateful to Dr. Clint Cary, MD, MPH, MBA and the team at Indiana University Health for their skill and knowledge. Looking back at my post from that day, my pain was only as high as a 4 out of 10. That's incredible given what he had to do! I'm thankful that Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation has allowed me to host the It Takes Balls podcast and that everyone who listens has pretty much only had positive things to say about it. It's an absolute honor to be able to share stories for others who need to hear them. Tomorrow will be episode 66 - looking forward to hitting the 100 episode mark next year!
