Cisplatin And Ototoxicity: The Hidden Impact On Hearing Testicular cancer can affect men at any age, and many go on to live long, healthy lives after treatment. However, the impact of cisplatin-induced hearing loss can last well beyond cancer treatment. Hearing loss can severely affect a patient’s quality of life, leading to challenges in communication, career limitations, and social isolation. The difficulty in hearing normal conversations or enjoying day-to-day activities can be emotionally taxing and hinder overall well-being. We are most grateful for Fennec Pharmaceuticals Inc for addressing this unmet need. Fennec Pharmaceuticals developed PEDMARK, the first and only FDA-approved sodium thiosulfate (STS) formulation designed to help prevent cisplatin-induced hearing loss. Approved for adolescents and young adults by the FDA, PEDMARK is also recommended by the NCCN guidelines for patients aged 15–39 but can be administered to older adults as well. Cisplatin remains a cornerstone in the treatment of various cancers, yet its potential to cause irreversible hearing loss, or cisplatin-induced ototoxicity (CIO), is a critical concern, and routine audiometric monitoring is not always integrated into care. Healthcare professionals play a key role in ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care that includes hearing preservation strategies. Collaborative efforts between oncologists, audiologists, and researchers are vital to preventing ototoxicity during treatment with platinum-based chemotherapies. ? Dominic Gross: From Fighting Crime to Beating Cancer Welcome to episode 76 In this episode of It Takes Balls, Dominic Gross, an FBI special agent and testicular cancer survivor, shares his journey from diagnosis to recovery. Dominic first noticed something was off while going through intense SWAT training, experiencing pain and swelling that he initially brushed aside. Struggling to find a primary care provider, he eventually secured an appointment, which led to a quick series of tests confirming his diagnosis. It was such a joy to watch this documentary on my cousin Dr. Khalid Y Alkhatib. Khalids’ personal and professional life has not been easy and a reflection of true resilience and dedication. Welcome to episode 74 of It Takes Balls with Surendra Ananth - a lawyer in Malaysia, testicular cancer survivor and TCAF advocate. In this episode, Surendra Ananth opens up about his battle with stage 3 testicular cancer and the unexpected path it took him on. With symptoms that didn’t point to his testicles at first, Surendra’s diagnosis came late—forcing him to make tough decisions about treatment. From navigating Malaysia’s healthcare system to traveling to India for his RPLND, he shares the physical and emotional hurdles he faced along the way. Growing up in a culture where men’s health isn’t openly discussed, Surendra now dedicates himself to raising awareness and helping others find the information he wishes he had. Working with the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation, Surendra helps disperse educational materials throughout Malaysia and hopes to do more for the fight against this disease.
