Yesterday we were pleased to oversee the delivery of the first Spectra Optia device to our new Cell Collection Centre at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The team got to see the arrival of our state-of-the-art apheresis machinery from Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies – marking an exciting step towards opening our centre doors to donors. Director of business development at Anthony Nolan, David Bennett, said: “Anthony Nolan’s 50 years of facilitating transplants makes us practice-leaders in the collection and provision of cells. ??Terumo BCT and Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation are joining forces to automate blood processing facilities across the Netherlands using the Reveos Automated Blood Processing System. This innovative technology can help enhance efficiency, increase the production of essential blood products, and reduce the physical demands on staff. By streamlining blood processing, Sanquin may be able to produce more platelets and plasma from the same number of donations, ensuring a consistent supply to meet patient needs. “Implementing Terumo BCT’s technology will have a tremendous impact on our nation’s blood supply,” said Peter Verheggen, Director of Blood Supply at Sanquin. “Blood donors provide an invaluable gift, and we have a duty to maximize its patient impact. Chetan Makam, Senior Vice President and General Manager of our Global Blood Solutions business shares insights in the Hindustan Times to help increase voluntary blood donations to combat Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in India. Last year the country launched the Sickle Cell Anemia Mission to address this disease and help bring screening and treatment solutions to more people. Chetan discusses integrating blood donation initiatives into existing SCD screening programmes and continued grassroots awareness and education initiatives. Also important is building awareness about the treatment pathway for red blood cell exchange, a treatment that removes sickle-shaped red blood cells from a patient’s bloodstream and replaces them with healthy donor cells. Red blood cell exchange helps to manage pain crises in SCD patients. India celebrates National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on October 1st, an important moment to consider blood as an essential medicine.
