At RE+, Ameer Abuhamdeh and Chase Anderson from Terrasmart presented their latest advancements in wind tunnel testing for single-axis trackers, offering a deep dive into how wind forces impact solar tracker performance. With over 700 hours of testing alongside wind labs CPP and RWDI, their research highlights the need for more refined methods to design trackers that can endure the increasingly severe weather conditions brought on by climate change. High wind events pose a significant challenge to solar tracker sites, leading to costly damage and downtime. Terrasmart’s approach addresses this by analyzing static, dynamic, and aeroelastic wind forces, all of which affect tracker stability, tracking accuracy, and mechanical wear. By optimizing damping systems and tracker stiffness, their designs aim to minimize these impacts and enhance performance. Site-specific customization is another key focus. As Chase emphasized, factors like tracker height, Ground Coverage Ratio (GCR), and torque tube stiffness play a critical role in adapting designs to project-specific conditions. Tracker height, for instance, can significantly influence wind load distribution, while a well-calibrated GCR can optimize land use and improve wind resistance. Ameer noted how the length and stiffness of the torque tube are crucial to maintaining structural integrity, even in high wind environments.
