Tackling ecological emergencies head-on through research, legal action & interdisciplinary advocacy.
关于我们
The Earth Rights Research & Action (TERRA) Program at New York University (NYU) School of Law is global collaborative hub for research, advocacy, and strategic legal action on ecological emergencies. TERRA NYU Law is highly interdisciplinary and experimental, pursuing bold and novel actions with a range of collaborators across geographies and disciplines—from biological and climate sciences to human rights law and international governance to Indigenous and multispecies justice advocacy and beyond. In doing so, we aim to realize human and more-than-human justice and rights within the limited timeframe left to avoid extreme scenarios of ecological deterioration. TERRA NYU Law currently hosts three lines of work: (1) the Climate Law Accelerator (CLX); (2) the Right to a Healthy Environment (R2HE) Toolkit; and (3) the More-Than-Human Life (MOTH) Project. For more information on each line of work, please read below. CLX is dedicated to strategic legal research, advocacy, and action on the climate emergency, in particular with respect to loss and damage. To read more about CLX, please visit www.clxtoolkit.com. Our line of work on the right to a healthy environment (R2HE) focuses on documenting and analyzing trends within the body of law related to the right to a healthy environment, in order to disseminate key insights for practitioners. To read more about R2HE, please visit www.r2he.info. The MOTH Project is a legal and interdisciplinary initiative that integrates concern for human rights and welfare into a larger concern for the rights and well-being of the more-than-human world and the web of life that sustains us all. In The Wave this month, I delved deep into lawsuits trying to hold the fossil fuel industry and other big polluters to account for losses and damages from climate change. Many cases have made progress in US and European courts, but others have reached major roadblocks and face a growing legal and political backlash. Not the shortest feature I've ever written, but a marker of where this important topic currently stands. Exciting Launch: Toolkit & New Report on the Right to a Healthy Environment! We are thrilled to announce the launch of two open-access resources from NYU Law’s Earth Rights Research & Action (TERRA) Program focused on advancing the right to a healthy environment: '20 Landmark Court Decisions' Report: In collaboration with Professor David Boyd and the UN Environment Programme, this report provides an in-depth analysis of 20 major court rulings addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. It showcases advancements in legal principles like non-discrimination, prevention, precaution, and polluter pays, all written in accessible language. R2HE Toolkit: This first-of-its-kind global database tracks legal developments in the right to a healthy environment and relevant jurisprudence. It offers country-specific profiles, identifies cross-cutting legal practices, and provides key insights for researchers and practitioners. Both resources aim to support the growing global movement for the recognition and enforcement of environmental rights. Read the Report: https://bit.ly/4h9if0r Find the Toolkit: www.r2he.info
