We Need Alternatives to Lithium-Ion Batteries for Stationary Energy Storage. by Sidd Mallannagari, My Climate Journey. "Our current reliance on lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries to meet energy storage needs presents 3 major limitations..." This is an excellent short outline of our Long Duration Energy Storage crisis. https://lnkd.in/gfVcbnsi

Solving our trillion-dollar energy storage crisis
关于我们
Terrament is building low-cost, long-duration energy storage using underground gravity batteries. Our patent-pending design maximizes the two simple ingredients of gravity storage: height and weight.

Wow, beautiful renderings Energy Vault! We'd love to learn how much energy you plan to store with gravity storage on a skyscraper like this Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). At Terrament, our napkin math never showed it to be financially compelling to add gravity storage to a city skyscraper, but maybe we missed something. Or is this maybe just as much an art demonstration as storage even if it's not cheaper than standard Li-ion? If so, this is an awesome way to celebrate gravity storage ?? ??♀? ? By our napkin math, even if you hoist a 1000 ton tuned mass damper up 1000 feet, you'd still store less energy than a 1 MWh shipping container of Li-ion (e.g. like Viridi can provide). So not sure how those economics would pencil out. (Hmm, maybe it becomes cost effective if it serves the double purpose as a tuned mass damper... interesting.) It'd be great to see some rough numbers if you have them. How much cheaper or more expensive would this be compared to standard Li-ion? Over the past few years we've had to fight against so much skepticism towards gravity storage due to confusion around its size and cost at very different scales, we're finding that clear research is really important for the field right now. Thanks for leading the way with gravity storage Energy Vault! Maybe our companies could collaborate some day. https://lnkd.in/dRJaseWr

Exciting times for #GravityStorage! Our friends at Gravitricity Ltd just announced new project developments to provide?underground gravity energy storage?to deep mine operators in Slovenia, Germany, The Czech Republic and Finland. "Underground?energy storage?gives end-of-life mine shafts, which otherwise face costly infilling and decommissioning costs, a second life." Gravitricity has already demonstrated its cable-hoist GraviStore technology with an above-ground 250kW demonstrator. Upon completion, these new full-scale projects may be the world's first non-hydro Underground Gravity Storage projects. Gravity Storage is quickly becoming a proven technology. Terrament is working hard to develop our novel gravity storage design which will maximize both height and weight in order to achieve grid-scale Long Duration Storage. We can't wait to build together with these amazing gravity storage pioneers. https://lnkd.in/e5U5bSDe

Congratulations & THANK YOU to Energy Vault for this huge accomplishment. Energy Vault just completed full testing on the world's first non-hydro gravity storage system. This is a HUGE de-risk event for gravity storage, and will make it far easier for Terrament to win over investors for our unique gravity storage system. (Terrament's design utilizes proven shaft drilling technology to unlock 20 times more height than above-ground systems which enables longer duration gravity-based energy storage.) Stats on the Energy Vault Project: - The Rudong EVx?project is a 4-hour 100 MWh energy storage system. - A 35kV overhead power line connects to an existing remote end substation.? - The official launch expected soon upon final provincial and state approvals. - Energy Vault has announced 8 more similar deployments totalling 3.7GWh. Today, pumped-hydro makes up 90% of grid-scale energy storage, but pumped-hydro is nearly tapped out. Gravity storage is a cheap, low-risk alternative that doesn't require mountains, water, or rare materials. Let's build! https://lnkd.in/ewsQfbvn

Thank you for your honesty, aramco. If you think that all plans to eventually quit oil and gas are a "fantasy," can you please share your ideas for a feasible path forward to ensure a livable planet? Does it include a commitment from Aramco to offset 100% of your carbon? If so, please share your detailed, actionable roadmap ASAP. Or, absent that roadmap from you, research has fortunately provided us with viable paths forward to prevent cataclysmic destruction. But all those paths forward (that I've seen) require carefully planned carbon abatement. Yes, it will be very hard. But it's not a "fantasy." It does require shifting economic incentives so that oil and gas is no longer subsidized, and we have shared accountability for the steep toll of climate damage. It's up to all of us to enact these difficult changes. #CERAweek https://lnkd.in/gHY4BkTf
Oil Executives, Meeting in Texas, Cast Doubts on ‘Fantasy’ Energy Transition

Terrament was grateful for the invitation to present at the CERAWeek conference last week in Houston, Texas. We gave a 20 min presentation about the rapid growth of #GravityStorage – a category of #EnergyStorage in which Terrament is building. A video of this talk is coming soon in a few weeks! In the meantime, here are some tweet snapshots from the week. As shown in some of these tweets, we were extremely disappointed in the lack of accountability from many oil and gas companies. It seems some oil and gas companies are now canceling plans to transition away from oil and gas, yet, they are not commiting to alternative solutions which would ensure a livable climate (see link below). If these companies actually believe it's "impossible" to quit oil and gas (despite research that says otherwise), then their honesty is truly appreciated; we need to hear and consider all viewpoints to work together and find new solutions. But, what is not acceptable, is for any company to acknowledge that their actions cause catastrophic damage (at taxpayer expense), while they refuse to change AND refuse to commit to other solutions AND fight proposed laws and regulations which would help fix the problem. Also, their profits are higher than ever. (More on all of this in the future. We may write a blog post.) Whereas a year ago, it seemed oil & gas companies might be ready to commit to real change (even if not soon enough), it seems they may now be preparing to blatantly reject any feasible effort to stabilize a livable climate. This is not a damn game. Research shows we have paths forward to prevent cataclysmic climate damage. But it all falls apart if oil and gas continues indefinitely without an abatement plan. It looks like we have a lot of work to do beyond just building the new technologies we'll need to survive. Thank you for taking an interest. </rant> https://lnkd.in/gHY4BkTf

Terrament is excited to share our new animated product video that explains how our underground gravity storage technology works! Huge thanks to Justin Weiss at Extinction Machine for their fantastic work on this - especially considering our tight financial constraints. They worked fast, and really captured our story well: Why gravity storage? Why underground? And why do we need it to solve climate? Check out Terrament's solution ?? The video is also now live on our website: https://lnkd.in/d7GpdSu
