As night falls, the space transforms into a tranquil haven, bathed in soft pools of ambient light. Pendant lights, thoughtfully woven among the branches of the hawthorn tree, cast a gentle glow, enhancing the serene nightscape. Whether basking in the sunlight or under the moonlight, the terrace invites moments of connection and calm. Driveway lights, carefully embedded into the existing paving band, subtly illuminate the previously dark driveway, welcoming the residents home. Terminal Warehouse’s new 8th-floor amenity terrace is conceived as a series of garden spaces which accommodate small group gathering and large event flexibility.?These spaces are composed of a cohesive “kit of parts”. ?The terrace design builds on the ecological and aesthetic themes from the courtyard which unify Terminal Warehouse in design and environmental stewardship. Nestled along lushly planted walkways, benches crafted from timber—reclaimed during the building’s renovation—offer intimate spaces for reflection and respite beneath the shade of newly planted trees. The rooftop features 20 trees, 65 shrubs, and over 2,300 perennials, grasses, vines, and groundcovers. A large artificial turf provides a flexible space for leisurely recreation, movie nights, or other events. Overhead, architectural pergolas provide filtered shade over the turf and adjacent seating areas which encourage spontaneous day-to-day socializing. The restoration of the historic Terminal Warehouse in West Chelsea, in collaboration with COOKFOX, breathes new life into this 1891 industrial landmark. Once a vital hub for commerce, Terminal Warehouse is now a reimagined urban workplace, blending its storied past with modern design. A serene courtyard provides natural light and air into the heart of the building. The large central landform at the center of the courtyard sits on structure and is composed of lightweight fiber soil and geofoam which create adequate soil depth for vegetation to thrive. The original warehouse was largely supported by timber columns which were sourced from old growth forests, some of which were 300 years old when they were harvested in the early 1500s. Dendrochronologists, or tree-ring scientists, from Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory confirmed the timber was old-growth longleaf pine from Alabama dating back to 1512. Some of these large timber columns were removed during demolition and have now been repurposed as site furnishings within the landscape – as seen by the timber benches within the courtyard. This fall, our yearly retreat took place in Upstate New York near Tupper Lake, where our Tupper Lake Waterfront Park project sits nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks. In 2013, terrain lead the development of the master plan vision for the municipal park. Thanks to the town’s unwavering dedication to the design vision, the park has been steadily transformed over the past decade, supporting a wide variety of activities and robust community programming, including the Summer Sunset Series, which hosts live music every Monday and Wednesday throughout the summer. Our Warner Brothers Discovery Headquarters project is now live on our website! Located in the Flatiron District, Terrain’s landscape design of Warner Brothers Discovery Communication’s new headquarters provides a green oasis and outdoor workspace. A once barren, ballast-covered rooftop, the existing roof provided challenging existing conditions with elevation changes and significant weight limitations which required creative design and engineering solutions.?The amenity terrace frames panoramic views of Midtown Manhattan and is lushly planted with a diverse mix of grasses, flowering perennials and shrubs which create a multi-layered and textured palette that transforms the space year-round. Terrain’s landscape design provides a series of landscape rooms for outdoor coworking & socializing and a flexible outdoor meeting space for various events and programming, including potential filming of outdoor cooking shows (for which the design team consulted several chefs from Food Network).
