Earlier this month we were thrilled to host Professor Dani Blatter?as the first speaker in our new research seminar series at Terra AI! She delivered an exciting talk on Randomize-then-Optimize (RTO-TKO)—a lightning-fast Bayesian sampling strategy for subsurface imaging. Her approach bridges the gap between traditional inversion techniques and full Bayesian uncertainty estimation, making it possible to model uncertainty in large-scale geophysical problems without the crushing computational cost of MCMC. And best of all? It’s embarrassingly parallel! At Terra AI, staying ahead of cutting-edge AI and geoscience research is at the core of what we do. If you're working at the intersection of AI/ML, geophysics, and Bayesian inference, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Here's a question for everyone—what’s the biggest challenge you see in bringing Bayesian methods to large-scale geophysical problems? Recently I've had the privilege to have conversations with policymakers, tech founders, and investors about how the US can compete with China in critical minerals. Timely, given the Executive Orders covering mining and energy yesterday. https://lnkd.in/emmx5UDy To me, it's not time to waive the white flag and subsidize sub-economic mines and refineries to ensure a minimal domestic supply. Instead, it's about (1) finding the assets that can stand on their own two feet, which exist - think about how big America and its allies are; (2) understanding where the levers are to attract a maximum of private, not taxpayer, follow-on investment; and (3) leveraging relative advantages in technology and entrepreneurial spirit to de-risk, build, and run critical minerals projects faster, cheaper, and better. The reality of China may mean price controls, strategic stockpiles, and government funding are still a part of the picture, but previously, we've seen taxpayer money go into assets that the mining industry has rightfully not wanted to touch, we've seen government departments fund permitting fights against each other, and we've seen funding go into startups with little insight on the scalability of their technologies or business models. Well-intentioned but a lot we can easily improve. Danny Donahue, John Mern, PhD, Ted Feldmann, Tyler Hall, Robert Eckford, Markus Zechner - thoughts?

Following my experience at the AWS event, it’s clear to me that AI is poised to revolutionize industries in ways we’ve only begun to imagine. At the event, Large Language Models (LLMs) were front and center, showing how the AI landscape is evolving—but the opportunity also lies in applying AI beyond the obvious, into sectors like mining, energy, and infrastructure. At Terra AI, we are at the forefront of harnessing AI for mineral exploration. It’s not just about chatbots or language models—it’s about using AI to help discover and develop the critical energy resources the world needs faster and more efficiently. Terra AI’s solutions are designed with a singular mission in mind: to empower the mining industry with cutting-edge AI technology that can drive smarter, more efficient operations. We are committed to helping mining and exploration companies leverage AI to achieve new heights of innovation and success. The future of mining is bright—and Terra AI is the key to unlocking that future. #TerraAI #mineralexploration #AItechnology #Innovation

I had the privilege of participating in an inspiring panel discussion at UC Berkeley alongside industry leader Eric Brown, the CEO of Planted Solar. We explored the transformative role of AI in the energy transition—a conversation that’s more critical than ever. While discussing the challenges posed by AI energy consumption, we also talked about the many ways AI is poised to make a positive impact. From optimizing solar and wind energy production to bridging critical gaps in mineral exploration and grid optimization, AI is rapidly reshaping how we approach electrification and decarbonization. The possibilities are boundless: ?? Accelerating clean energy deployment through automated design and installation ?? Enhancing resource discovery to meet the surging demand for critical minerals ?? Filling gaps in labor and driving efficiency where it matters most The energy demand challenges are no longer on the horizon—they’re here. But with AI, we’re not just responding; we’re building solutions that can make the transition faster, smarter, and more sustainable. We left the event energized by the curiosity and passion of the next generation of business and engineering leaders. High-purity quartz (HPQ) is one of the most? important materials on the planet– essential for semiconductors, solar panels, and advanced optics. As demand for clean energy, connectivity, and smart devices continues to increase, so will demand for HPQ. Today 95% of HPQ comes from 1 location - Spruce Pine, North Carolina. This extreme concentration leaves these critical supply chains vulnerable to disruptions (like Hurricane Helene which forced a weeks-long shutdown in Spruce Pine earlier this year). As the mining industry sets out to uncover new HPQ reserves, Terra AI supports exploration by helping teams make more confident screening decisions, spend less time and money on barren targets, and get discoveries to market several years faster with up to 50% less drilling.

Zinc is the 4th most used metal in the world-- critical for clean energy and infrastructure. Unfortunately, volatile prices and rising exploration costs have led to a steep decline in discoveries.?We're here to fix that.

Zinc prices have surged in the last weeks over supply concerns. Zinc is the fourth most used metal, just after copper– critical for clean energy and infrastructure. The IEA predicts demand from clean energy will rise by 1.8-2.6x by 2040. Unfortunately, volatile prices and rising exploration costs have led to a steep decline in discoveries. Mine production has declined for a third straight year. We need a new approach. At Terra AI , we help exploration teams make more confident screening decisions, spend less time and money on barren targets, and get discoveries to market years faster with up to 50% less drilling. The recent decision by China to impose restrictions on antimony, gallium, germanium, and graphite, leaves the foundation of the US technology supply chain in a dangerous situation. The US is heavily dependent if not entirely dependent on imports for all of these metals, all of which come from supply chains dominated by China. The US needs to invest in a more diverse supply chain.

China has just banned exports of antimony, gallium, and germanium to the US, and introduced end-use permits for graphite. This will impact semiconductors, EV batteries, solar panels, fibre optics, munitions... https://lnkd.in/dvGjVTBi When people think critical minerals, they think lithium, rare earths, copper (Olga Chumanskaya, Danny Donahue). But there are many other metals and minerals that are crucial to energy, defense, AI, and other advanced technologies (John Mern, PhD.) The US is 100% import dependent for gallium and natural graphite, 82% import dependent for antimony, and 50% import dependent for germanium. China accounts for 98% of world gallium supply, 77% of graphite, 60% of germanium, and 48% of antimony. Part of the reason China has been able to dominate these metals is because their markets are small compared to what the big western mining companies (i.e. BHP, Rio Tinto, Glencore etc.) need to target at their $100B+ scales (gold, gold, gold, copper, iron ore...). Gallium and germanium are super low volume - 610 tonnes and 220 tonnes respectively. But China is proving we ignore small but critical markets at our peril. We need right-sized capital targeting friend-shored opportunities across minerals, not just copper and gold, if we are serious about protecting supply chains.
