The goal to “build a better mousetrap” fuels tech innovation, and Senior Sales Engineer Mike McDowell has seen many a mousetrap. From running an ’80s-era VAXcluster that could fill a basketball court to selling Ternary’s multi-cloud FinOps platform, “Mac” relishes working with customers to identify and solve technical problems, matching business needs with solutions. After years working in technical sales at capacity-planning and application-monitoring companies, Mac saw how the arrival of the public cloud created a massive disruption in how applications were designed and hosted. The conversations shifted from annual datacenter planning and quarterly software deployments to continuous releases and day-to-day cost discussions. Clearly, it was time for a better mousetrap. FinOps provided the language for that conversation, and Mac was there from the start. As Director of Sales Engineering at Cloudability, Mac helped its co-founder (and future FinOps Foundation founder), J.R. Storment, adapt his “Cloud FinOps” book into a practitioner certification framework and certify the first batch of practitioners. When Mac joined Ternary, in 2022, he saw a team with the vision and talent to build the next-generation FinOps platform. Ternary has a wealth of knowledge and a modern architecture to address today’s more demanding requirements. And Ternary’s startup environment fosters mission-driven experimentation. At Ternary, Mac says, “we’re all pointing in the same direction, willing to continuously iterate and improve. And everything is aimed at helping customers maximize the value of their public cloud investments.” When he’s not showing customers the power of Ternary’s FinOps mousetrap, Mac can often be found up a ladder painting or taking care of the yard and mature oaks and maples surrounding his home. He describes this as simple budget-friendly self-reliance. “I’d rather do it myself than pay someone else to do a worse job,” he jokes. But when it comes time to remove old, diseased trees—dare we say legacy architecture?—we see the FinOps pioneer at work, enabling a future of healthy growth. #FinOps #cloudcosts
