At last week's National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE) annual conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, cybersecurity took center stage during a vital panel discussion on protecting critical port infrastructure. The panel was hosted by our very own Mike Lee, Chairman of NAWE’s Security Committee, and featured expert insights from Rick Siebanaler – Maritime Cybersecurity Institute, LCDR Kristi Sloane and LTJG Matthew Fritz – U.S. Coast Guard. The discussion addressed the growing threat of cyberattacks on maritime operations and highlighted strategies to safeguard the security and efficiency of critical port infrastructure. The session provided timely, actionable insights for industry leaders navigating the challenges of an increasingly digitalized world. Cybersecurity remains a cornerstone of protecting the nation's supply chain, and we’re proud of the expertise Mike Lee has contributed to the maritime community. His work, alongside the insights shared by the esteemed panelists, underscores the industry’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding U.S. port operations. #Cybersecurity #MaritimeSafety #PortInfrastructure #NAWE2024 #Leadership

#MeetTSS and Ricardo Talavera, our Senior Operations Manager in Los Angeles/Long Beach. Ricardo’s journey into maritime security began over a decade ago after exploring various career paths. His experience spans years at the Port of San Diego, working across cruise and cargo operations. Drawn to TSS by positive industry feedback and a clear alignment with his values, Ricardo saw an ideal opportunity for both his career and work/life balance. Today, he brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to managing our security operations with quality and customer service. Let’s hear more from Ricardo:? ? Q: What is interesting or noteworthy about working at your terminals and what does a typical day look like? A: Working with container and bulk terminals, there is really no typical day. Anyone who works around the ports will tell you, "Every day is different." This is what makes our job interesting. We focus on the challenges of the moment and work to provide our customer with the security they need for a safe operation, every day. Q: What are some of the unique challenges of the security industry and how do you handle them? A: In workforce management, we face challenges, such as retention, turnover, training, etc. In the maritime industry, we must consider federal rules and regulations, extended training, coast guard updates, and day-to-day operational changes. All of these factors are crucial in the quality of service we strive to provide. ? Q: Can you share a personal or professional achievement that you're particularly proud of and why? A: Before joining Terminal Security Solutions, it was always a challenge to maintain a manageable workload without inferring with my family life. I have learned to prioritize the balance between the two. Open lines of communication and outstanding leadership motivate you to get the job done and enjoy a meaningful personal life. I am honored and proud to be part of the TSS Family.? ? Q: Can you share a personal philosophy that guides your work? A: As a leader, it’s essential to set an example, keep the team motivated, and actively listen to develop a successful action plan. It all starts with your behavior. Your behavior is how you act and interact with others on your journey to achieve a goal or overcome a challenge. ? Q: What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in security? A: I encourage anyone to join maritime security. The maritime world is small, allowing you to create phenomenal relationships and make it a career. My advice is to pursue a career you truly enjoy, whether in maritime security or another field. When you love your work and connect with your team, job satisfaction naturally follows. ?

This month, we marked a decade of dedication and excellence in maritime security. Our journey has been fueled by integrity, accountability, and the relentless spirit of our amazing team. We’re proud of key milestones that have defined our success. In 2015, we received U.S. Coast Guard accreditation for our FSO course, setting a high standard in our industry. By 2017, we secured our first cruise security contracts in Cape Liberty and Galveston, and soon expanded into the cargo sector with our first contract at the Port of Long Beach. Our growth continued with major contracts at Port Canaveral, Port Everglades, PortMiami, and the Port of Los Angeles, solidifying our reputation for excellence. A heartfelt thank you to our team for your hard work and to Nautilus International Holding Corporation for your unwavering support. Together, we've built something truly special. Here’s to many more years of success, growth, and opportunity for all at TSS! #TSS10Years #Anniversary #Teamwork #FutureForward #MaritimeSecurity

#MeetTSS Introducing Allison DeWitt, our dedicated Office Manager in Galveston. Working in cruise terminal security for nearly 8 years, her passion for the industry was sparked when a close friend introduced her to the field, leading her to take on various roles beyond her initial position. Over time, she has become deeply involved in operations, learning every aspect of the job and earning a Coast Guard-approved FSO certification. Her hands-on leadership and commitment to collaboration have been key to her success. ? Let’s hear more from Allison: ? Q: What stands out about working at the Port of Galveston?? A: We have a powerful sense of community and teamwork, everybody knows everyone, and we all work together to accomplish a common goal.? ? Q: What are some of your occupational challenges and how do you handle them?? A: Managing priorities and expectations. We communicate to guests that our priority is their safety and well-being, not to cause unnecessary delays. When security issues arise, I encourage our team to stay polite, smile, and reassure guests that we will resolve the matter swiftly to get them on their way to enjoying their vacation. ? Q: In your view, how does your security team contribute to a positive cruise passenger experience while also ensuring their safety?? A: I have been fortunate to have numerous team members work with me since my first job in the industry. These team members show up on time, every sailing, with a smile on their faces, dressed in neat and clean uniforms, and enjoy the interactions with the guests. Our team understands the importance of their security role while remaining friendly and polite.? ? Q: Can you share a personal or professional achievement that you're particularly proud of?? A: While remaining in the role of office manager, I have made it my personal goal to be a part of the operations team. I attend all operations at the port. I have taken the time to learn each position at the terminal so that I can step in and assist where necessary. I will stand a guard post, assist with screening, do wands and pat downs, or go on safeguard duties until 4am. If I am asking our team to do something, I want them to know I am willing to do it as well. Lead by example. My most recent achievement that I am proud of is that I completed the Coast Guard approved FSO course and received my certificate.? ? Q: What’s a typical day like at the Port of Galveston? A: I describe the events of the day to new hires as a fun, fast paced day. We are debarking 3,000 guests and embarking 3,000 guests, everything must run like a well-oiled machine. Our team is like family. We work well together, and we take time to celebrate each other’s life milestones. It makes for a more positive and rewarding work environment.? ? Q: What advice would you give to new employees at TSS? A: Take the initiative to learn as much as you can. The more you know allows you to be utilized in more positions, move up, and be more beneficial to your team.
