“One of the most special days of my life,” said Richard Betts, co-founder, co-CEO, master distiller of Tequila Komos, and the heart behind the Komos Foundation. Today, the first schoolhouse built from the byproducts of tequila production stands open in Tequila, Mexico. Betts pioneered this initiative over a decade ago in Oaxaca, and now continues this work in Tequila in an even bigger way with the Komos Foundation. None of this would be possible without the outstanding efforts of Elias Campollo Orendain, our Director of Operations, who’s been leading on the ground in Mexico with passion and heart. “Elias has led this entire initiative like the world depends upon it—and in certain ways it does,” Betts continued. “Also, we are eternally grateful to Ernesto Rizo for the most beautiful architectural design, all of the men and women who built this (some of whom have children that will attend school in the new house), the community of Amatitán, and, of course, the teachers at Escuela Gabriela Mistral.” We are tackling a problem—the waste created from spirits production—with a new solution, using that waste to build adobe bricks, an age-old building technique in the region. Instead of hay and water, bagazo (the spent agave fibers) and vinasa (the liquid left behind) create the bricks. Those bricks are then committed to the community to build local infrastructure, starting with this schoolhouse in Amatitán. Now, 39 more kids will be able to attend school this year. It’s the first project of many, and we’re just getting started.

I was proud to be with our co-Founder, Richard Betts, when he received the Waste Reduction Achievement award from Global Drinks Intel during last TFWA in Cannes. Sustainability and economic development is at the heart of Casa Komos Brands Group philosophy. There is no business if it isn't sustainable and if it doesn't help local populations to thrive. Richard Betts understood it a long time ago when he developed the process to create adobe bricks out of Agave Waste, bricks then given to local communities to sustain their economic development. The creation of the Komos Foundation is another step in expanding our ESG initiative and ensuring the industry is engaging in more sustainable practices.
