Rishita Changede the CEO and founder of Teora is leading a pioneering effort to address global food security by combining cutting-edge biotechnology with real-world solutions for agriculture and aquaculture. Based in Singapore, where over 90% of food is imported, Dr. Changede’s mission focuses on creating sustainable, cost-effective solutions to combat the high attrition rates in aquaculture and agriculture, which often devastate farmers’ livelihoods. Dr. Changede founded TeOra out of a profound concern for farmers facing repeated crop losses due to disease and environmental pressures. In Southeast Asia, up to 70% of aquaculture yields can be wiped out by common diseases, leaving farmers in debt and vulnerable to financial ruin. With traditional approaches like antibiotics becoming less effective and contributing to environmental harm, Dr. Changede saw the urgent need for an innovative approach that prioritized both effectiveness and sustainability. TeOra’s mission is to bridge this gap by using Nobel-winning advancements in synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and material science to create solutions tailored to the needs of farmers. At the heart of this work is TeOra’s unique platform, SOLAQ, which enables the rapid development of biologics designed specifically for disease management and growth enhancement. The SOLAQ platform produces next-generation, orally delivered vaccines and growth enhancers, specifically targeting issues in tropical and remote agricultural settings. Unlike traditional vaccines, which often require ultra-cold storage and complex administration, TeOra’s solutions are designed for stability and ease of use, making them accessible for farmers facing logistical and environmental challenges. “We wanted to create a solution that could truly serve farmers in real-world conditions,” Dr. Changede explains. The platform's ability to respond rapidly to emerging threats mirrors the speed seen in the COVID-19 vaccine development, highlighting its potential to adapt quickly to the evolving challenges of global food security. Creating these innovative solutions hasn’t been easy. Dr. Changede and her multidisciplinary team invested years in research to develop biologics that could withstand transportation and remain stable in diverse conditions. One breakthrough was in encapsulation methods, which allow TeOra’s products to avoid degradation even in challenging climates. The impact of TeOra’s work is evident. Early adopters in aquaculture report healthier yields, reduced disease, and a marked decrease in the need for harmful chemicals. In the coming years, Dr. Changede envisions TeOra as a leader in sustainable food production technologies across Asia and the global south, addressing critical food security issues in regions where 70% of the world’s population resides. BREAKING NEWS The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet has today decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. This year’s Nobel Prize honours two scientists for their discovery of a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated. The information stored within our chromosomes can be likened to an instruction manual for all cells in our body. Every cell contains the same chromosomes, so every cell contains exactly the same set of genes and exactly the same set of instructions. Yet, different cell types, such as muscle and nerve cells, have very distinct characteristics. How do these differences arise? The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows each cell to select only the relevant instructions. This ensures that only the correct set of genes is active in each cell type. This year’s medicine laureates Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were interested in how different cell types develop. They discovered microRNA, a new class of tiny RNA molecules that play a crucial role in gene regulation. Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans. It is now known that the human genome codes for over one thousand microRNAs. Their surprising discovery revealed an entirely new dimension to gene regulation. MicroRNAs are proving to be fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function.
