Conserving land where people and nature can thrive.

关于我们

TennGreen Land Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit and the oldest accredited statewide land conservancy in Tennessee. Through sound science and partnerships, TennGreen Land Conservancy identifies and conserves land across Tennessee for wildlife corridors, critical habitat, and public benefit. TennGreen Land Conservancy protects, cares for, and connects people with Tennessee’s natural world by providing meaningful outdoor experiences, establishing conservation easements, supporting restoration efforts, and acquiring (or assisting in the acquisition of) privately-held land. Tennessee is known for its extraordinary beauty from the mighty Mississippi to the Great Smoky Mountains. Our rich forests, farms, and wetlands are not only our home but also home to a vast diversity of fish and wildlife. Tennessee is experiencing extreme human development pressure, and every missed opportunity to protect our unique lands is an irreversible loss to our future. We must act swiftly and smartly to protect the places that provide us all well-being and an unrivaled quality of life.

As Tennessee's oldest accredited statewide land conservancy, TennGreen Land Conservancy is dedicated to protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, the vistas we cherish, and everything in between. And all of that is made possible thanks to the generous support of our members and partners.

Governor Bill Lee has signed an executive order to help protect the Duck River—this is great news! The Duck River is a vital resource in Middle Tennessee, winding 269 miles and supporting the region’s economy, recreation, and biodiversity. Recognized as North America’s most biologically diverse freshwater river, it is home to an astonishing array of species, including more than 150 types of fish, 60 mussel species, and 22 aquatic snails—some found nowhere else on Earth. Additionally, the Duck River supports 150,000 outdoor enthusiasts annually, offering exceptional opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. It also provides clean drinking water to 250,000 residents. Protecting this river ensures a thriving future for its unique wildlife and the countless Tennesseans who depend on its natural beauty and resources.

TennGreen Land Conservancy recently partnered with Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU)’s advertising campaigns class to craft an awareness campaign highlighting our work to protect vital headwaters as part of the Ridges to Rivers #RCPP grant led by the Tennessee Aquarium. To express our gratitude, we invited the students on a unique journey! They visited the Tennessee Aquarium and the Aquarium's Conservation Center, where they had the rare opportunity to see the #endangered laurel dace—a small but mighty fish that this conservation work seeks to protect. The laurel dace’s habitat on Walden’s Ridge faces threats from drought and agricultural runoff, which depletes oxygen in the streams they call home. Thanks to this partnership, these future advertising professionals witnessed the impact of their work firsthand and learned about the challenges facing these ecosystems. #Together, we’re amplifying the importance of protecting streams, species, and the environment. ?? Thank you, MTSU and the Tennessee Aquarium, for joining us on this journey!

On December 3, TennGreen is hosting a free, one-hour webinar with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for Tennessee landowners. During this event, landowners will learn about the Fish & Wildlife Partners Program, which provides free technical and financial assistance to landowners interested in improving wildlife habitat on their land, and about TennGreen’s conservation easements, which ensure landowners can protect their land and its conservation values forever. This webinar is perfect for any Tennessee landowner, whether they own farm, forest, wetland, glade, or bluff. Please share with anyone you think might be interested in attending! ?? For the sixth time, one of our trees at the Belle Forest Cave & Arboretum was named a winner in the Nashville Tree Foundation's Big Old Tree Contest! The winning tree was an American Beech, nominated in the "Unique Trees" category—a new category this year that honors unusual trees. What makes this tree unique is that it's basically a ruin, but still alive thanks to 1/2 of a healthy trunk and two healthy roots. It was once hit by lightning, which caused the crown to break off and half the tree to be torn down. Nashville Tree Foundation's Big Old Tree Contest was established in 1986 and is hosted annually to celebrate trees and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our urban forest. Thank you to Hans-Willi Honegger for the nomination!

TennGreen often hosts events around the state to give others the opportunity to explore and connect with nature. Recently, we led a hike on private land in Rutherford County that we protected earlier this year with a conservation easement. The land, known as Lamar Cedar Glades & Woodlands, is the largest known privately-owned cedar glade habitat in the area. It was a fun day exploring the woodlands and learning about the unique and rare glade species!
