Every night Shauna Sweeney calls her dad, Mike, across the country in California to tell him she loves him. Sometimes on an extra good day, Mike says, “I love you, too.” Ten years ago, when Mike was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, Shauna went from being his daughter to part friend, part assistant, and in so many ways, part parent. As her Dad struggled with losing his independence, Shauna struggled with caregiving from nearly 3,000 miles away. A veteran in big tech, she hacked together solutions to help coordinate care from afar, eventually getting the courage to leave her job and dedicate her life to finding tech solutions to help caregivers along the Alzheimer's and dementia journey. “When done right, technology can help preserve dignity and enable better care by empowering and supporting family caregivers like me. As we navigate the intricate dance of caring for our parents with Alzheimer's, our embrace of technology not only can lighten the journey but also help us strengthen our deepest bonds.“ Like many family caregivers, Shauna has learned to wear many hats. But today Shauna is simply a loving daughter. **Tender’s 2nd Care Council** “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” -Helen Keller. Last week, at Yelp we convened our 2nd Tender Care Council. And while I would have said it was impossible to beat our first, this was an even more vibrant exchange of ideas around family caregivers, their roles and responsibilities, and just as importantly - how employers and society play an important role in bringing the spotlight to the largely unseen work of 54 million people in the U.S. as they pitch in to help their aging family members. Spearheaded by thought leaders like Stanford dciX Director Susan Golden, a beacon of innovation in caregiving, NY City Council Member Crystal Hudson, an absolute changemaker for aging populations in NYC and MSNBC Anchor Richard Lui, a storyteller of the first order. This time around, we unearthed 3 truths: 1) Family caregiving is a mosaic of complex needs requiring holistic solutions and a central marketplace to move the needle and create lasting change. 2) Too often we bundle up family caregiving in the same conversation as aging. They are connected but separate, and services and access for the elderly might not always benefit family caregivers (often younger) equally. 3) A robust community and public / private systemic support are the bedrock of effective caregiving. Let's see more of it!
