We are a New York-based architecture studio united by values, and driven by a sense of purpose and promise.

关于我们

TenBerke is a New York-based architecture studio united by values. We are bound by the promise that architecture must build toward dignity and decency, that the truest measure of good design is the good that it does the world. And that it must be good in these ways: imaginatively, sustainably, delightfully. We believe that architecture is never an end itself. It is a tool that turns what we have into what we need. Our projects lead to outcomes: the beneficial ways people use our spaces; how our buildings prompt agency; and how our projects connect us meaningfully to time and place, and to one another. We design projects to be the instruments of meaningful and sustainable change.

Marc and Kiki are featured in the latest episode of Brick & Wonder’s podcast Working Together, where they dive into their collaborative process, how they lead their teams and foster creativity, and how architecture and interior design are more closely intertwined than you might expect. Hear them talk about their recent project, The Greenwich Village Townhouse, as they describe how they achieved a balance of old and new in the historic Townhouse for a family of four through their collaboration between architecture and interior design. Metropolis Magazine featured our Sackett Hill House in an episode of their sustainable home series, Natural Habitat. Founding Principal Deborah Berke and Senior Principal Marc Leff were interviewed for the episode. Sustainability is a key part of what we do at TenBerke and is seamlessly integrated with our design philosophy, “which is to design with focus and precision,” says Marc. “If everything is done right in the house, it has that look of inevitability; it could not be shaped any different way, the materials could not be any different.” Watch the episode below.

On September 30, Yale University celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Physical Sciences and Engineering Building (PSEB), the centerpiece of the Upper Science Hill Development (USHD), which spans 16 acres and 611,000 square feet. The complex will serve as a hub for quantum science, engineering, and materials initiatives. It embraces the topography of New Haven’s urban and landscape context, and integrates the campus with the surrounding neighborhood. The USHD is one of Yale’s largest and most complex buildings to date, and it embodies both Yale’s and TenBerke’s commitment to excellence, sustainability, and community-oriented design. This groundbreaking commences Phase 1 of 2, with construction completion projected for 2030. We have released a toolkit that considers ways to reduce carbon emissions in the design of houses, dipping below Zero Net Carbon, taking on a regenerative stance.? ? "Designing the Carbon Sequestering House" studies the major components of a house — the exterior walls, roof, and floor — comparing the embodied carbon of standard well-performing construction methods against proposed alternatives that use carbon sequestering materials. As a point of departure for designers, contractors, and homeowners, our toolkit explores pathways to design houses that not only lower their carbon footprint but go further to capture carbon from the earth’s atmosphere.? ? This toolkit builds on the studio's commitment to an ethics-based practice. It expands upon the studio's design research put forth in the 2022 Adaptive Reuse white paper, and 2023 publication of Transform: Promising Places, Second Chances, and the Architecture of Transformational Change.? ? Learn more about our toolkit, "Designing the Carbon Sequestering House" at the link below: https://lnkd.in/g4BRuCtp ?? ?? ?? ? The toolkit was written and researched by Christopher Longman, Joshua Wujek, Eleanor Birle, Catherine Leung, and Arthi Krishnamoorthy.? ? Supported by the on-going research and practice of the TenBerke Sustainability and Building Technology Working Group which includes, Marc Leff, Scott Price, Andrew Ledbetter, Matt Scarlett, Jenna Ritz, Harsha Sharma, Toby Stewart, Josie Baldner, Adelaide Mackintosh, and Michael Ruffing, in addition to the important work of all our colleagues at TenBerke.? ?

The project is our most ambitious completed work to date—not just in size but also in mission.? The AIA Architecture Award program celebrates the best contemporary architecture regardless of budget, size, style, or type, while the AIA Housing Award recognizes the best in home design—showcasing how beauty, safety, sustainability, and comfort can come together.? At the end of May 2024, we’ll be saying farewell to our friend and colleague, Principal Rhoda Kennedy, as she leaves TenBerke to begin a fresh chapter. ? Rhoda joined the practice in 2002 and became a Principal in 2019. Rhoda contributed to the practice's operations and co-led our office’s mentoring program. Her notable projects include the Mannes Conservatory at The New School, the High Street Residence Hall at Dickinson College, and conceptual design of The Women’s Building in New York City. Together, we’ve drawn, debated, celebrated, and built. We’ll miss you, Rhoda! Wishing you the very best on your next adventure in London!?
