The onslaught of rough macro data and rougher tariff headlines picked up steam this week, and markets around the world felt more than the “little disturbance” President Trump predicted in his State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Trump administration's strategic bitcoin reserve executive order made this one of the most significant weeks in bitcoin's history in a way that seems to have been drowned out by near-term macro headwinds. This order sends a huge signal that would have been unthinkable less than a year ago but that the market has so far largely missed, setting up what we see as maybe the best ever risk-adjusted moment to invest in bitcoin and its ecosystem. It was another volatile week for markets, as investors who had apparently taken President Trump neither seriously nor literally balked at the administration’s announcement of aggressive tariffs, sending the S&P500 down several percentage points before it partially shook off the impact over the course of the week. The tariff tantrums also continued to heighten stress in the gold market, where supply tightness has ramped dramatically as investors and banks look to move supplies out of the Bank of England and into the US ahead of potentially increased trade frictions. These headlines interestingly coincided with the President’s proposal for a new US sovereign wealth fund to be supervised by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent – two outspoken sound money advocates with favorable views of bitcoin – the latter of whom has been clear about the need for a “global economic re-ordering” in which neutral reserve assets like gold and bitcoin might have significant roles to play. The fragility of legacy markets was on full display this week, as a new open source LLM out of China called into question key assumptions underpinning the massive run in AI-levered equities over the past two years. While much is still yet to be hashed out and the downdraft may well have been a knee-jerk overreaction, the episode highlights just how much latent volatility is lurking beneath the surface of the cornerstone assets that market consensus has deemed the must-own stocks for any responsible portfolio. We wouldn't be surprised to see more market volatility coming down the pike, particularly given the Trump administration's new aggressive tariffs; however, in our view, this week just further exposes the cracks in the fa?ade of the current market structure and reemphasizes the long-term fundamental value of a neutral reserve asset with a fixed supply, as well as equity in the best companies with leverage to that asset. All eyes were on DC this week as newly inaugurated President Trump kicked off his second term by churning through executive orders, including the full pardon of bitcoin pioneer Ross Ulbricht and the creation of a new digital assets working group. While this was far from the catalyst many bitcoin bulls were awaiting, the week also saw many headlines that should be very fundamentally positive for bitcoin, including the confirmation of Cynthia Lummis as head of a new Congressional subcommittee on digital assets, the withdrawal of SAB-121, and more states exploring their own strategic bitcoin reserves.
