Today is a proud day for our lab! Temple University featured our very own Andrew Tran in recognition of being awarded the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Andrew has been an amazing mentor for other undergraduate students in the lab, and in the department more broadly. He has set a fantastic example that inspires others to get involved in research and to build their careers. Congratulations Andrew!

What a privilege today to welcome so many brilliant students to OwlHacks 2024! Even better to be able to listen and be inspired by Dr. Kristin Austin, Ed.D.! She inspired all of us to continue promoting and supporting women in tech! Let's put I.D.E.A. out of business! ??

?Better late than never to post about the fantastic STARS that we have in our lab! Thanks to STARS Computing Corps funding and amazing celebration????, a bunch of our students got to head to San Diego, CA to present the research they have been working very hard on. They all did a wonderful job!! A special congratulations to Christine Kapp who won best research poster ? In addition, they attended the CMD-IT/Tapia Conference, which celebrates diversity in computing! Amazing to see our students get these opportunities and really make the most of them.?? Thanks Noel Chacko for helping us document these great moments!

Last week I had the unique opportunity to attend the CMD-IT/Tapia Conference??????and participate in the STARS Computing Corps Celebration?? in San Diego, CA?? I’m excited to share that my team’s recent poster publication in the Temple HCI Lab, “Exploring the use of Generative AI to Support Automated Just-in-Time Programming for Visual Scene Displays” has won best research poster at the STARS Celebration Poster Session?? Thrilled to share that our workshop, "Broadening Participation in Computing by Designing Hackathons that Engage Local Communities," has been accepted to the 2024 Tapia Conference in San Diego, CA! ?? ??? ?? My team and I (Afifah K., Salma Aly, Egi Rama, Chiku Okechukwu) are excited to spark discussions on designing hackathons and hope participants will bring what they learn back to their local communities and continue to build lasting impact. ?? ?? ??STUDENT SPOTLIGHT??: Seth Bernstein! Seth is a senior undergrad research lead in our lab and has been a member since March 2022. He hopes to continue his academic career after undergrad and get his PhD in Human Computer Interaction with a focus in Accessible Education????. Why Research? ? "Education should be accessible to everybody, and we as researchers have the tools to make that accessibility a reality." Something He's Learned? ???? "Through being in the lab I have learned so much about how academia works and how much of an option a PhD is postgrad. this is something that is often lost in the normal CS curriculum." Favorite Memory? ?? "Travel to Italy to present my research on analogies at the ITiCSE conference. I was able to talk about education with people from all over the world, all while enjoying some amazing pizza! ?? " We are very lucky to have Seth as a leader within our lab, and we know he will continue to do great as he continues his education.??

Congratulations to the REU Pervasive Computing students on their work this summer!???? Last Wednesday they got to showcase their research and we are beyond proud of the work they have done.
