Did you know that nematodes can damage golf course turf grass? It's especially problematic in Florida, where sting, grass-root and lesion nematodes can cause big damage to the greens. According to the University of Florida's IFAS Extension, "turfgrass that has damage from nematodes will usually exhibit short, stubby dark roots that appear rotted. If nematode populations become high enough, turfgrass might become yellow or brown and wilted, allowing weeds to move in as the grass thins out." Several golf courses in the southeast reply on TELONE? (sold specifically to golf courses as CURFEW?) to help manage nematodes and keep the greens in great shape. Recently, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) released an independent scientific study, funded by the California legislature, on possible alternatives for the widely used fumigant pesticides: 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D, sold under the brand name TELONE?) and chloropicrin. The study found that there are currently NO AVAILABLE ALTERNATIVES to 1,3-D and chloropicrin that would work as universal replacements for these fumigants. These findings were also independently reviewed by scientific experts from several universities and non-university stakeholder groups. DPR Director Karen Morrison stated, “These findings highlight key challenges with identifying and replacing higher risk pesticide uses with alternatives and the critical need for continued research as we work to increase access to discover more sustainable ways to manage pests.” CCST concluded that more research is needed to determine which combinations would work best for each of California's crops currently reliant on 1,3-D or chloropicrin." We are proud to offer California specialty crop growers a powerful nematode management solution with TELONE?. California growers rely on TELONE? to help manage nematodes, which allows them to grow more food on less land, with less overall inputs. You can read the press release at the DPR website.

??As spring application season approaches, carrot growers across the country know that nothing works better than TELONE? for managing destructive plant parasitic nematodes. AgNet Media's Specialty Crop Industry Magazine outlines a carrot trial in Georgia that shows the efficacy of TELONE? (to manage nematodes) and TELONE? blended with Chloropicrin (for protection against soilborne diseases, in addition to nematodes). The article goes on to say, "Chemical nematicides are therefore important elements in the suppression or eradication of root-knot nematodes in carrot production." When California nut & orchard growers plant new rootstock, they know their investment will last decades. But if they don't properly prep the soil, they risk prunus replant disease which can result in poor growth and poor vigor over the entire life of the crop. That's why prepping the soil with TELONE? before transferring rootstock is key. TELONE? creates a zone of protection around the delicate developing root system, allowing roots to establish without the threat of nematode pressure. The result is a healthier root system that can more efficiently uptake water and nutrients, leading to healthier orchards with improved quality and increased yields. In modern agriculture, the efficient use of resources is paramount. Growers continually seek ways to optimize inputs such as water and fertilizers while maintaining or enhancing crop yields. This approach to functional sustainability values a holistic approach where farmers achieve financial and regenerative agriculture goals. TELONE? pre-plant soil fumigant fits well into a functional sustainability plan because it not only combats harmful nematodes but also contributes to water savings and reduced reliance on other agricultural inputs by increasing plant root uptake efficiencies. Next up in our Question & Answer series: do fumigants sterilize the soil? The answer is NO! Let's dive into the details: ?? Advances in genetic sequencing show us what we previously could not see. It was previously believed that fumigants “decimate” the soil and indiscriminately kill all microbes including the populations critical to soil structure and fertility, nutrient cycling, and more. However, new science shows that the soil microbiome quickly rebounds 4-6 weeks after fumigation. ????Phytobiomes Journal published research showing that fumigation with 1,3-D (TELONE?) increased the population of Enterobacteriaceae, a family of bacteria that include species that specialize in nutrient cycling, while simultaneously decreasing the population of pathogenic fungi such as Pythium and Verticillium. The impact of beneficial microbes can be significant, with visible plant health noted inside of a single season. ?? Pre-plant soil fumigation with TELONE? manages destructive nematodes while allowing beneficial microbial populations to come back stronger than before, contributing to long-term soil health. ???? Growers can feel good knowing they have an effective tool for managing nematodes, all without any long-term negative effects on soil health. The science is clear that TELONE? is not a soil sterilizer, and microbial populations that may have been depressed quickly rebound, thus providing beneficial activities important for plant and soil health.
