One of the keynotes at #FYUZ24 this week was NVIDIA Chris Penrose, talking #AI in #telecoms. He covered the role of #LLMs, plus a big focus on AI in the RAN. One topic that keeps cropping up is the notion of #GPUaaS, delivered from either central supercomputing facilities, or spare capacity at the edge of the network. Recent announcements from NVIDIA and SoftBank Group Corp. were used as talking points, including a claim that $5 revenue can be generated from $1 capex (see James Crawshaw post for discussion). I've got a measure of agreement that telcos might monetise a centralised bank of CPUs, especially in countries where #SovereignAI is seen as critical. The local incumbent telcos might be encouraged (or subsidised) by governments to run a national AI facility. This is similar to reusing assets or infrastructure from telcos' non-AI cloud / datacentre operations, or contracted national services such as TV broadcast or public-safety networks. But I'm skeptical of the AI-RAN concept of deploying lots of distributed compute for RAN functions like layer 1 basebands or power management, and then selling excess capacity for third-party AI. The usual use-cases were rolled out, such as #autonomousvehicles, offloaded AR/VR processing, #cloudgaming, industrial automation and so on. I see this as another wishful-thinking attempt for telcos to offer #edgecomputing services. The SoftBank AITRAS architecture chart shows virtualisation and orchestration to host both NVIDIA AI Aerial (for the radio layer 1), and its AI Enterprise (for other workloads). This is basically the same as the original MEC idea, where the focus was on sharing servers for #5G core functions which need to run at the edge (like UPFs or security elements), with room left over for customer workloads as well. Edge AI shares many of the limitations as MEC: - Where is the interconnect to the rest of the Internet and other MNOs? Few applications can run just in a single operator RAN, and they likely won't want to use the main MNO peering / transit path - Is the compute request "up" from devices nearby (cars etc) for latency benefits, or "down" from the cloud (spot market for distributed GPU resource)? The former is coverage-dependent and latter isn't really edge - Many device applications use Wi-Fi a large X% of the time, so workloads will only hit the MNO RAN edge node for 100-X% - What are the power implications? Does the telco have enough supply to run the compute hot the whole time? What are the costs? And is it green enough? - Lots of issues around security, privacy etc. in both directions I'm doubtful on both tech and suggested commercial models. Another theme jumps out. Japan's telcos are turning into software / platform providers, hoping to sell to other operators around the world. Rakuten has Rakuten Symphony for network automation. NTT DOCOMO has OREX SAI, INC. for #OpenRAN along with NEC Corporation. I'm not sure about KDDI. Is AITRAS just a competitive response by SoftBank?

I was delighted to share the stage and moderate the Automation in Telecom panel at Fyuz Dublin last week with thought leaders Azhar Sayeed, NG-Voice CTO, Andrew Thiessen, Mitre Head of 5G and Sameh Yamany, Viavi CTO. We discussed priorities and frameworks with current tools, what is the AGI inflection point, some provocation about spectrum sharing and had some laughs. #tip #fyuz #agi #telecom #automation #openRAN #privatenetwork #ngvoice #mitre #viavi #laughs #dublin #guinness

Looking to stay ahead in networking advancements for AI use cases in 6G Networks? ?? Our exclusive LinkedIn group, 6G-XCEL, is designed for industry as well as research professionals —offering access to expert discussions, resources, and networking opportunities. 6G-XCEL team shared interesting perspectives around the impact of Generative AI on core network structures and the challenges and opportunities that arise from this transformation during this panel discussion in Telecom Infra Project #FYUZ24 event. What were the key takeaways? #1 GenAI is causing a substantial shift in network organization, reshaping network architectures and operational paradigms, with networks increasingly designed to be?scalable,?flexible,?autonomous, and?capable of self-optimization. #2 GenAI is impacting both core and edge/wireless networks. #3 Supporting AI capabilities at the edge seems to be an increasing need, - this is what our 6G-XCEL project is all about! #4 ?Both in-network AI and AI-native networks are important for 6G use cases. Special thanks to CONNECT Centre and Professor Dan Kilper for connecting us ??
Generative #AI and Foundation Models are transforming how we approach #networks, bringing new applications and challenges. Our #Fyuz24 panel speakers at the 'Future Networks: Are We Ready for the AI #Tsunami?'explored the impact of these technologies, from the evolving role of open networking to the complexities of managing AI-powered systems. Key takeaway? As networks adapt to support AI's massive data needs, industry collaboration and innovation will be crucial to future readiness.
