At #FYUZ24, one of the most compelling takeaways was the call for deeper ecosystem collaboration to enhance #ApplicationQoE and boost network efficiency. The main stage Application QoE panel, expertly moderated by Dean Bubley, highlighted key insights and opportunities: Jamie Qian Chen, Technical Lead Manager, Tiktok, referenced the recently published TIP research paper, "QoE/QoS Measurement Framework Approach to QoE Engineering," which identified the need for more technical QoE collaboration between the client, server, and network. Jaime indicated how CAPs (Content and Application Providers) can self-optimize the client and server but need the network's cooperation to deliver optimal QoE. Des Keane, Engineering Director at YouTube Video Infrastructure, Google, expressed excitement about the new IETF working group focused on SCONE (Secure Communication of Network Properties). This in-band protocol supports real-time updates and encryption, enabling streaming video applications to adapt to changing network conditions like congestion. Renuka Bhalerao, Network Infra Ecosystem Programs, Meta referenced SCONE and network efficiency projects as excellent examples of recent ecosystem collaborations that can be leveraged by the rest of the industry and expressed a need to create a forum for scaling and originating collaborations. Cayetano Carbajo, Director for Core, Transport, and Service Platforms at GCTIO, Teléfonica, emphasized the importance of greater collaboration for applications to understand networks and vice versa. He highlighted Teléfonica's efficiency project with Meta, which has successfully maintained QoE while reducing network load by 25%. Jason Livingood, SVP at Comcast, highlighted latency as the primary challenge for fixed networks now that the QoS optimization era of scarce resources has passed. He discussed the IETF's work on L4S, introducing dual queues for latency-sensitive and non-sensitive traffic, and noted that Comcast is actively rolling out L4S in production. . Before the panel, Telecom Infra Project held an Application QoE Birds of a Feather (BoF)session: VIAVI's Chris Murphy led the Application QoE measurement discussion outlining TIP research from: Francois Blouin, Xinli Hou, Chris Murphy, Kafi Hassan, Javed Rahman, Minqi Wang, Ricardo Serrano Gutierrez, Kevin Smith, Gavin Young, Mayur Channegowda I moderated a Mobile Network Application QoE panel that included Dean Bubley, Renuka Bhalerao, Jaime Qian Chen, Des Keane, and Cayetano Carbajo. Jason Livingood moderated a Fixed Network Application QoE panel that included Mario Di Dio, Magnus Olden, David Debrecht, Kevin Holley, and James Carroll. TIP BoF sessions are a collaborative precursor to Project Group (PG) formation, bringing together like-minded individuals to explore emerging topics. The next step in forming a PG involves engaging with companies interested in co-chair roles and collaboratively developing a charter to guide the group's objectives.
