I enjoyed a recent Retail Brew interview where Herrish Patel, a senior leader with Unilever, discusses some of the growth opportunities the company has created in the CPG industry. Love this quote too: "You need to predict the future a lot faster than you've ever done." Some folks reading this will be like: predict the future?? I'm still trying to interpret the past! The Good News folks: small and medium businesses can leverage much of the same technologies that years ago, only global behemoths could afford. And the not-so-good news: we've got to embrace these new opportunities! The game is evolving rapidly and you can lose a lot of competitive ground by clinging to traditional ways of doing things. Looking at you, spreadsheets! ?? Check out the link to Herrish's interview in the comments below. A couple of other topics: ?? Have you heard tariffs mentioned once or a billion times in the last week? Some survey data suggests U.S. retailers will be boosting imports into West Coast ports by 14% in November and 6% in December (YOY) to mitigate the risk posed by potential tariffs. ?? Here's an interesting factoid: college freshman enrollment is actually declining. It's down 5% in Fall 2024 over Fall 2023. However, community colleges are doing better: as their freshman enrollment is only down 0.4%. Data suggests that Business and Healthcare-related fields are the top declared majors for undergraduates. ?? Caught up with my friend (and former boss) Ray Attiyah ?????? yesterday, author of "The Fearless Front Line: The Key to Liberating Leaders to Improve & Grow Their Business". At the core of this proven approach to fueling organizational success is the "Run-Improve-Grow" model. Essentially, how can we ensure that teams don't spend 100% of their time each day only "running" the business. You can find several versions of the book on Amazon. And you can still find Ray out there in the market, doing big things. ?? Finally: our Supply Chain Now team is proud to support a wonderful initiative & extraordinary non-profit mission led by Elevate Our Kids, as the team helps to bridge the Digital Divide. Big thanks to Rob Tiffany?? for putting this on our radar a few years back. The non-profit is currently leading a donation drive to support K-12 students in need, helping close the #digitaldivide to empower kids to keep learning regardless of their circumstances. Just $300 purchases a laptop and Internet access for remote learning. This year, Elevate Our Kids has a goal to support those communities hit hard in the Carolinas where students lost everything including homes, schools, and infrastructure. It's the small things in life, folks - - like sharing a meal with a dear friend & getting caught up on business, life, family, stuff. I'm trying to make more time for that. We always talk about the velocity of the business world...and endless change. And it's true, there's no going back and seemingly never an opportunity to slow things down. But life is also hitting ludicrous speed on a personal basis for every single one of us. I have a daily, visual reminder of that, as I watch my bright children grow up a little more each day into young adults. I don't know about you, but it makes me think of just how many things (and there's a ton of them) that "life is too short for". Well, life is NOT too short for bad selfies. ?? As showcased by my historically poor selfie skills on full display here (with my dear friend Enrique Alvarez, as we shared breakfast last week). Speaking of good ol' Enrique: he & his Vector Global Logistics team were recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for their immense dedication to helping others, doing good, giving forward & being the change, as they earned the organization's "Best Corporate Steward Award". I'll drop the link in the comments, where Enrique accepts & offers a few words. Richly deserved. I love how he starts: as Enrique shares that his daughter chose school over attending the banquet with him - - so he took a selfie with the audience (from the podium) to show her what she missed. Keeping it real. Love that. Life is way too short NOT to celebrate the moments of humanity, that not only help us maintain a sense of humor, but also a critical sense of balance. I think these moments are part of what Stephen Covey said about "not spending time, but rather INVESTING time." Life is way too short NOT to celebrate extraordinary colleagues. Katherine Hintz here at Supply Chain Now has been doing big things for our team for years. I've learned a ton from working with her, and Katherine has driven outstanding improvements & change in our business. She was recently promoted to Director of Sales & Partnerships, where her innovation, experience & expertise will help a ton of organizations that enter the growing SCN ecosystem. We've already seen her impact in the last few record-breaking months. Richly deserved Katherine. I am a notorious user of every character that LinkedIn affords me. Life is too short to be brief. And there are plenty of other things that life is too short for. But gratitude is not one. And as we get closer and closer to my favorite holiday of the year, I am profoundly grateful to work with truly gifted human beings & genuine leaders that make it fun to do what we do: on the good days, the bad days and all points in between. That's Good News that I'll celebrate each day, far beyond Thanksgiving. “This a wonderful day. I've never seen this one before.” - Maya Angelou #FridayVibes #GoodNews

I began sharing a weekly "Good News" message back during the pandemic. For one, I wanted to share incredible, uplifting stories from the present & the past with my network, given all the suffering & loss that much of the world was experiencing. But also, frankly, I found it personally therapeutic. Even getting a few minutes' worth of a respite & distraction from whatever troubles your soul - - well that is a good thing. One of my earliest inspirations was one Mr. Henry Darby, who was the principal at North Charleston High School back in 2020. Now imagine how tough it is to be an educator or a school administrator these days (or any days). And now multiply that by the extraordinary challenges that the pandemic presented. However, none of that stopped Mr. Darby from surreptitiously taking on a part-time job at Walmart during the evenings. But not to help his own family make ends meet. As NPR reported, Mr. Darby was "...stocking shelves from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., three nights every week. He's been using the paychecks from that work to help make sure kids from his school have food and basic supplies, or help their families pay their bills. Some money has also gone to former students who need help, or to teachers at his school who need a boost." Mr. Darby was called to action for a variety of reasons: he saw his students & colleagues hurting. And he was also reminded of his own humble beginnings: "...he recalled going with his mother to collect milk and soda bottles from the roadside, hoping to save money to help pay for his education. He talked of trips to the dump, not to throw things away, but to find anything that could help them get by." Mr. Darby would eventually be recognized for his wondrous deeds by receiving the state of South Carolina's highest civilian honor: the Order of the Palmetto. More importantly, he would inspire so many others to also do for others in powerful, non-attention-seeking ways. Reading this story again, for the 17th time, fills my heart with pride for my fellow South Carolinian. I share this today with all of you, during this time of pain, anxiety, stress & heartache for many. Between natural disasters, elections, the holidays & more: a lot of folks are suffering. I also want to present an opportunity to you, which will help others, as well as serve as a powerful distraction: today (Nov. 8th) at 10am ET, my wonderful friends at Vector Global Logistics are taking a page out of Mr. Darby's book, all to support the victims of the devastating floods in Valencia, Spain. Please consider tuning in to learn more & possibly help. Link below. Supply chain is a global business. But let's treat it more like the global family it is, to ensure that no one is left behind. Let's all be like Mr. Darby - and be the change that this world so desperately needs. #supplychain #SpainStrong Supply Chain Now Harold Sally Enrique Kristi Mario Maria Antonio Koray Theodora David Amanda Jake Karin Marty Tandreia Nuria Mary Kate Rob Debbie
