Yesterday, we were so thrilled to be joined by the NYC Mayor's Office of Urban Agriculture over on the TFFJ farm at the MLK, Jr. Educational Campus! Students led a tour of the farm and systems, and cooked a delicious tomato soup with callaloo, basil, and tortellini, and individual flatbreads with basil gremolata. Teens for Food Justice (TFFJ) is a 501c3 nonprofit galvanizing a youth-led food justice movement working to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to fresh, healthy food and to end the cycle of health complications dramatically and unequally impact low-income New Yorkers of color. TFFJ works within Title I middle and high schools in food deserts, training students to maintain indoor hydroponic farms growing thousands of pounds of produce annually that is served at school lunch and distributed to surrounding communities. Empowering Youth, Feeding Communities: Our unique after-school program trains youth, ages 12 to 18, to build and maintain indoor hydroponic farms that serve as local sources for fresh food and centers for nutrition and health education in their schools and communities. Students use cutting-edge hydroponic technology to grow substantial quantities of crops for their school, families, and neighbors. They are trained to become health and nutrition ambassadors who teach skills for healthy eating, shopping, cooking, fitness and lifestyle behaviors to others. Through their own, their peers’, their families’ and their neighbors’ involvement, these young leaders will be the catalysts for a grassroots food justice movement in their community. The Need: Teens for Food Justice addresses one of NYC’s most critical challenges: getting nutritious food and health resources to those most in need. Sixteen percent of New Yorkers are food insecure and undernourished; 1 in 4 children live in households lacking sufficient food. And, even when healthy choices are available, they are often underutilized due to lack of familiarity with how to shop for and prepare the food. The TFFJ youth-led program brings these resources to food desert neighborhoods, exposing families to foods and lifestyle habits that improve community health, while building the next generation of advocates in the fight for food justice.

Thank you, Vertical Farm Daily, for highlighting TFFJ’s mission to build a food-secure future through school-based, youth-led hydroponic farming. Since 2010, TFFJ has been addressing food insecurity by establishing urban hydroponic farms in New York City schools, educating students on food justice, and empowering them to shape the future of food. With strong funding, political support, and community backing, TFFJ is set to operate eight farms across New York State by the end of 2024, impacting 22 schools. This year’s expansion includes a new farm launching next month on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, with two more following in Far Rockaway, Queens, forming a network that could produce up to 30,000 pounds of fresh food annually for over 5,000 students and families. These new farms are part of an exciting regional hub designed to strengthen the local impact of urban farming in underserved communities. The TFFJ Annual Gala on October 22nd at the Hotel Edison Rooftop was a powerful night celebrating Teens for Food Justice! Hosted by the incredible Christopher J. Hanke and featuring a captivating performance by up and coming Broadway star Jasmine Amy Rogers, the evening honored Queens Borough President Donovan Richards for his commitment to fighting food insecurity. Together, with the generous support of our community, we raised more than $806,000 to empower youth, expand access to fresh, healthy food, and drive change in underserved communities. Our theme, GROWING TOGETHER, came to life as dedicated educators and inspiring students shared their transformative TFFJ experiences.
