People ask us, "what makes you different from other MSP's?". Here's an example of going above and beyond! 10:23 PM: I'm trying to relax after a long day and attempt to turn off my brain. My phone has already been changed over to DnD to try and maintain some sort of peace in the after hours. I hear my E-mail ding from across the room on my PC. It's almost 10:30 at night so I'm thinking "whatever it is, I'll read it in the morning". 11:07 PM: Ding! Email goes off again. I was just getting ready to crawl into bed and decided to take a look at my computer as I walked by. I see it's back-to-back E-mails from the owner of one of our clients. His Daughter has been severely hacked and the whole situation is a "S#!t Storm". The e-mail ends with "I need your help to secure my family". How do you ignore this call for help? I call his daughter and find out she was tricked into an Apple Account Scam. It was a sophisticated attack that began when she lost her Apple Credit Card. A Fraudulent purchase, a fake phone call, a bit of emotional manipulation and she handed over her password to the Apple Account. Instantly, she has lost access, devices are removed from her account, emails changed, authenticator changed. Everything is GONE...Documents, Photos, Contacts, Email, Phone Numbers, Passwords, Bookmarks...everything you choose to sync to your iCloud is now in the hands of a truly evil person. I walk her through what she needs to do in regard to resetting critical passwords to banking, financial accounts, any account linked to a credit card, personal information etc. We talk close to an hour...well past midnight. There's nothing I can do to help recover her account, but I can guide her in putting up safeguards around the critical aspects of her life. Sadly, As a Cyber Security Expert and IT Business owner, I get these calls a lot...this was the 3rd one this week from a person who lost access to a personal account and has no way of recovering it. This was an Apple Account. The other a Facebook page that also ran their business page. These are the things I and my company do for our customers and our friends on a daily basis. We can only do so much with software, tools and training. The world is an unfriendly place and there is danger around every corner and buried in every email or website you visit. Before you find yourself in this situation, try to do the following and remember these rules! 1. Make sure MFA is enabled on anything and everything you have a password for. 2. Never use the same password more than once. Get a good Password Manager Like LastPass, Dashlane or 1Password. They are cheap, sync across devices and will alert you to dark web breaches that may affect you. 3. COMPANIES DONT CARE ABOUT YOU! If you receive a call from a company saying there is a problem with your account, hang up. Go and find that company's contact information and YOU contact THEM.
