Hello and Happy Thanksgiving Week to our US followers! A week from today will be Giving Tuesday, an annual event where US-based nonprofits promote their work to encourage donations during this often-slower time for charitable giving. This year, we're hosting a virtual "open house" with a panel and office hours for anyone who'd like to learn more about how we work to #BridgeTheTechGap. Please join us to learn more about Techtonica's programs and impact, as well as how you can get involved!

Thanks for sharing, Michelle! Do any of you have more tips for her about Git and GitHub best practices?
?? Using Git/GitHub: Lessons in Version Control and Collaboration ?? As I’ve been developing my final project, Git and GitHub have been invaluable for keeping my code organized, ensuring quality, and incorporating feedback efficiently. Thanks to the direction from my mentor Shikha Mehta and support from Techtonica staff Daaimah Tibrey, here are a few takeaways from my experience: ?? Sticking to the Plan: With a detailed roadmap in place, I mapped out branches and set specific goals for each pull request. This structure kept my workflow smooth and prevented overcommitting changes in one branch, allowing for focused, manageable updates. ?? Commit Messages and Amendments: Writing clear, concise commit messages became a priority. I used Git’s --amend feature to refine messages, ensuring each one accurately captured the intent of changes—vital for tracking progress and easing code reviews. ?? Collaboration and Rebase Practice: Getting feedback from my cohort mates was essential, and I used this opportunity to hone my rebasing skills. While awaiting PR approvals, I progressed on other branches, then rebased to seamlessly incorporate any suggestions. ?? Managing Pull Request Comments: Addressing feedback was key. I made sure to respond to each suggestion and referenced specific comments when making updates. This approach kept the conversation organized and allowed reviewers to track changes effectively. ?? Syncing Local and Remote Directories: To avoid potential merge conflicts, I consistently synced my local repo with the remote repository. This ensured a cleaner workflow, reduced errors, and made merging much smoother. This project has been a reminder of Git/GitHub’s value—not only for version control but also for enhancing my technical skills, collaboration, and attention to detail. ?? What are your top Git tips for team projects?

Every participant in our current cohort has grown so much, and is being challenged to combine all of their new or expanded technical and core skills in one individual capstone project right now. We're lucky enough that some participants, like Michelle B., have also chosen to share vulnerably about this phase of their growth journeys. Growing pains can be tough, but support from cohort members, program staff, and volunteer mentors makes a huge difference when participants need just a little more encouragement. If you'd like to be a mentor and encourage our next cohort like Shikha Mehta has done for Michelle, mentor applications for H1 2025 are open now on our website:?https://lnkd.in/gMii5xXH and, if you only have an hour and want to make an impact for our current cohort as soon as next week, we still have openings for practice interview volunteers: https://lnkd.in/gahfYSNB
Embracing New Ways to Plan: A Growth Mindset Journey I knew going into my capstone project at Techtonica that planning would be a big part of the process. But I didn't quite expect just how much planning we’d have to do—and how different it would be from what I was used to! Usually, my planning style involves grabbing a notebook or doing a brain dump in Excalidraw (a digital whiteboard tool). This time, I had to work with tools I wasn't comfortable with: pitch decks, detailed scheduling, and structured planning. My instinct was to stick with my familiar ways, and honestly, the change gave me a lot of anxiety. At one point, I felt so frustrated that I wanted to throw my hands up and go back to what I knew. But with some encouragement from my mentor Shikha Mehta and a lot of self-reflection, I decided to use this as an opportunity to grow. While I typically prefer a more flexible approach compared to rigid structures, I reminded myself why these workflows exist—to make project development smoother, clearer, and more efficient. So, through gritted teeth, I committed to implementing these new methods. And now, as I head into week 2 of 4 of this project, I can see the benefits clearly. I found that the detailed schedule is helping me stay on track and making it easier to communicate progress with my collaborators. I feel more prepared and confident, and I've learned that sometimes new methods aren't meant to hinder—they're actually meant to help. Keeping a growth mindset isn't easy when anxiety kicks in. But it's worth it. #GrowthMindset #Planning #PersonalDevelopment
