Canada-Africa Collaboration: A Future Built on Innovation and Trade The Africa Tech Summit was a powerful reminder of the growing ties between Canada and Africa, particularly in the tech sector. I had the privilege of speaking with Crista McInnis, Regional Senior Trade Commissioner at the Trade Commissioner Service | Service des délégués commerciaux, about the role of trade, innovation, and diaspora engagement in strengthening these relationships. Here are a few key takeaways: ? Canadian businesses are increasingly looking to Africa for investment opportunities in fintech, e-commerce, and digital healthcare. ? The African diaspora in Canada is playing a pivotal role in bridging markets and driving economic transformation. ? The Trade Commissioner Service is actively supporting Canadian companies and academic institutions in expanding their operations in East Africa and beyond. ?? Canada is NOT for sale. But are we truly investing in its future? We can talk about patriotism to withstand the forthcoming economic trade challenges, and we can talk about rallying behind Canadian brands, but are ALL Canadian brands part of the equation? Are businesses by founders that don't look like you part of your supply chain and preferred vendor lists? Grateful to The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce for hosting me to discuss the new face of entrepreneurship—one that's innovative and globally ambitious. As global trade tensions rise, Canada's strength lies in our homegrown businesses and economic sovereignty. The reality is compelling: ? 33% of Canadian businesses are immigrant-owned, creating 25% of new jobs ? Indigenous-owned businesses grew 43% since 2005, yet remain underfunded ? Women-led startups generate 78¢ per dollar invested vs. 31¢ for male-led ones Three success stories that inspire: Manjit Minhas started with $10,000 at age 19 and built a $155M brewing empire, becoming Canada's first woman brewery founder. Her success isn't just about beer—it's about breaking barriers. Claudette M.'s Protexxa secured a $10M Series A in 2024, driving AI-powered security innovations and transforming our digital landscape. Jenn Harper built Cheekbone Beauty into an Indigenous-owned sustainable brand now at Sephora, achieving B-Corp certification while mentoring Indigenous entrepreneurs. The future of Canadian entrepreneurship is: ? Tech-driven: 71% of startups now use AI & machine learning ? Globally minded: 13% of startups have international customers ? Impact-focused: 91% integrate sustainability practices Beyond Talk, Into Action: ? Consider a 10-15% revenue spend on diverse suppliers ? Support entrepreneurs strategically—not as a checkbox ? Build relationships—we win together, or not at all Thank you Kevin Selch, Loren Remillard, Amanda Buhse, Noah Cote, Shawn Yuan, Natalie Bell, CWS, The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce for creating a platform where these conversations drive change. Canada isn't for sale—but it's time we truly own our economic future. Thank you to Techsoma Canada Ifeanyi Abraham for publishing a great article on my talk here: https://lnkd.in/dhTqRV7Z Also, thank you to all of the BLACK women speakers, voices who have stood strong and paved the way for us up and coming girlies to take stages and speak. I wouldn't have the confidence I have built today without observing the brilliance of Camille Dundas, Kike Ojo-Thompson, Stacy-Ann Buchanan, Makini Smith, Anita Erskine, MCM, Stachen Naomi Lett-Frederick, MBA, Nerissa Allen, Jackee Kasandy, Shannae Ingleton Smith, Tiffany Callender, Pauline Christian, Emily Mills, Karlyn Percil-Mercieca. I know I have forgot some women leaders I look up to, but I just want to say thank you!!! Happy Black Future Month. I had the privilege of speaking with Crista McInnis, Regional Senior Trade Commissioner at the High Commission of Canada, about the role of trade, innovation, and diaspora engagement in strengthening these relationships. Here are a few key takeaways: ? Canadian businesses are increasingly looking to Africa for investment opportunities in fintech, e-commerce, and digital healthcare. ? The African diaspora in Canada is playing a pivotal role in bridging markets and driving economic transformation. ?
