      It's a busy time of year for HR, and that includes our own HR Manager, Kaitlin! She and her team are always busy - whether creating robust videos about benefits, helping to ensure staff have all of the information they need, or providing consistency across onboarding process, Snagit and Camtasia are essential tools that help her be successful. ??       I work at TechSmith and I'm going to shamelessly plug our products because I use them EVERY SINGLE DAY as an HR Manager. No cap (do I earn Gen Z credits? ?? ). ?? Let's talk Snagit, a powerful screen capture and image editor for clear communication. Here are a few of the ways my team uses it: ?? To send quick screen shots with annotations via email or chat to explain something quickly and efficiently ?? To create step by step infographics using our handy templates. I recently used this to explain our new Performance Review process to management ?? Making hilarious memes, because who doesn't love a good meme ?? Let's talk Camtasia, a screen recorder and video editor. Here are a few ways my team uses it: ?? To create robust videos discussing new initiatives or policy updates that we can easily link to our intranet, ensuring everyone receives a consistent message now and in the future ?? To record short videos that focus on benefit FAQs, such as how our disability benefits work, what our ESOP means for employees, and definitions of certain insurance lingo. We call them Benefits Bytes (we're techy and punny) ??       Give your learners something to chew on! When teaching about big picture concepts or more complex information, surely simpler and clearer is better, right? Sure, the information needs to be clear. But if you really want people to retain it, we need to understand how the mind really works. Julie Dirksen, Learning Strategy Consultant at Usable Learning, explained a fascinating test of this she learned from a science content creator. He created simpler, clear-cut videos about a physics concept and tested them against more in-depth videos that dealt with common misconceptions about those concepts. In both cases, the information was absorbed. But retention of that information was much higher in the second case. ?? Why? A complex idea like this had a far easier time of sticking in the mind when attached to thoughts the viewer already had. ?? It connected in a way the first video didn’t. And that is the secret to information retention.
