TechOWL (formerly PIAT) helps people with disabilities explore the tools and technology they need to be independent. TechOWL is Pennsylvania's Assistive Technology Act program. TechOWL has 9 regional centers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We have many different programs and projects including: · A statewide technology Lending Library - "try before you buy" · Answering questions and providing information to Pennsylvanians about Assistive Technology · Demonstrations to help people find the best technology to fit their needs · Training and events · ReUse accepting donations and finding homes for lightly used equipment · Free Special Phones for people who can’t use a typical phone · iCanConnect for people with both vision and hearing loss TechOWL is part of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University. Happy Autism Acceptance Day!
It's Autism Acceptance Day! It's also autism acceptance week...and month! Here are some reminders for you: ?? 70-80% of autistic people have reported mental health issues. ???? Around 20% of autistic people are in full time employment. 9?? Some studies show that autistic women have 9 times the mortality risk of non autistic women the same age. ?? A Swedish study indicates that the average life expectancy of autistic people is 54. ?? Autistic people have a higher suicide rate than non autistic people. ?? Whilst statistics suggest boys are more likely to be autistic, women are actually just as likely but are more often misdiagnosed or overlooked. Whist we absolutely must celebrate this month and highlight the positive lives and stories of autistic people, we must acknowledge the need for change. We must acknowledge how vulnerable the community is, especially high support needs autistic people, trans autistic people, autistic people of colour and all autistic people who are further marginalised and deserve protection. #autism #autismacceptance #autismacceptancemonth
