Last week, we had the honor of hosting Sean Gilbert, Managing Director of MIT Singapore/Asia programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with some of his students. This event is part of Singapore’s broader initiative, led by Singapore Global Network (SGN) 's Regional Director (America), Cheryl Lee, to strengthen global connections by fostering meaningful and lasting relationships with Singaporeans, their friends, and partners worldwide. Sean shared insights on how MIT's MIT International Science & Technology Initiatives (MISTI) program, a key initiative within the MIT Center for International Studies (CIS), continues to empower students with over 1,500 global internships, teaching, and research opportunities across 75+ countries annually. With a focus on AI, Climate & Sustainability, Healthcare, and Social Impact, MISTI connects students with cutting-edge research, industry leaders, and global challenges. The program is rapidly growing, with 170 AI internships spanning 20 countries and exciting new collaborations, including plans for the MIT MISTI ASEAN hub in Singapore. From startups to multinational firms, MISTI bridges the gap between innovation and real-world application. It was inspiring to hear directly from his students (Anne C., Kevin Jiang, Vy Pham, Enyu Zhu, and Belinda Vela) about their experiences and their excitement for their upcoming visit to Singapore this summer. Sean's talk was followed by startup showcases featuring fellow Singaporean founders, including Thiri Shwesin Aung - (Founder & CEO), and Jay M. A. (Co-Founder & COO) at Global Impact Assessment presenting Nyxion, as well as Suman Lal (CEO) of Theromics Inc. Cheryl Lee, the general director of SGN will begin the event with her opening remarks. The program then will feature a talk by our guest speaker Sean Gilbert, the managing director of MIT-Asia Pacific Programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a startup showcase. Sean Gilbert is the Managing Director of the MIT-China, MIT-Singapore, and MIT-Australia & New Zealand Programs, overseeing projects across the Asia-Pacific region with MIT students, faculty, and partners. He founded the Singapore (2002) and Australia & New Zealand (2013) programs and is expanding initiatives in Southeast Asia, including launching a MISTI Global Teaching Labs initiative in Vietnam in 2025. Sean also leads the Center for International Studies' Asia regional program and the MISTI AI Impact Area. Before MIT, he co-founded EcoTrends International in Taipei and worked in Taiwan’s Panvest Group and in reinsurance in New York. Sean holds a Master's in Chinese Studies from Princeton University and a Bachelor's in East Asian Studies from New York University. He was born in England, raised in Australia and New York. We were honored to have Daron Acemoglu, Institute Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in Economics, with us at the TINS: Technology Innovation Studio last Wed. During his enlightening talk, Professor Daron focused on how AI influences productivity, inequality, and labor markets while also examining the disruptive challenges and opportunities AI presents. Drawing from his co-authored work, Power and Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity, he provided a cautiously optimistic perspective on our shared future. Productivity and Inequality Acemoglu observed that expectations for AI-driven productivity growth might be overstated. Only around 5% of U.S. businesses currently use AI, despite the United States having been a major player in digitalization since the 1960s. This era saw a huge surge in patent filings, yet the Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth has been disappointing. Acemoglu also noted that the prevailing vision of AI as “autonomous machine intelligence” often channels technological development toward automation, which generates significant adverse consequences for distribution and wages. Labor Market Implications He highlighted that while 19.9% of tasks are estimated to be exposed to AI, only 23% of those are profitable to automate. This translates to merely 4.6% of tasks feasibly being automated within the next decade. Consequently, the estimated GDP growth from AI in the same period is just 1.16%. These figures call into question more dramatic projections about AI’s ability to overhaul the labor market. Challenges Ahead Acemoglu warned of the dangers of relying too heavily on AI for information, emphasizing the potential loss of collective social learning—one of humanity’s most distinctive traits. He posed critical questions such as: if everyone depends on large language models for knowledge, who will produce genuinely new insights? Even more troubling is the erosion of academic independence in AI research, which is increasingly overshadowed by corporate influence and driven by market incentives that do not necessarily align with the public good. Promises and a Path Forward Despite these concerns, Acemoglu still sees hope in adopting more targeted AI models that prioritize pro-human agency. He briefly referenced early visionaries like Norbert Wiener and JCR Licklider, whose ideas remind us that technology can—and should—augment human abilities rather than replace them. As the year draws to a close, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued collaboration and support. It’s been a true pleasure working alongside you, and together we’ve made meaningful strides in driving innovation and sparking insightful events, interaction over the past few months. In just six months since its launch, TINS: Technology Innovation Studio has hosted over 30 curated events with renowned speakers and invited attendees, and carried out more than?15 innovation tours for international delegations, startups, regional representatives, and executives. TINS also conducted 8 virtual coaching sessions on fundraising, and supported new product developments in the area of healthcare. We also had the pleasure of supporting the soft landing of international startups as they were looking to establish their presence in Boston. We organized hackathons in international locations in collaboration with MIT Hacking Medicine, and successfully executed on consulting projects with major corporations such as The Coca-Cola Company and universities such as UMass Boston. The most exciting program for us though was the graduation of our scholars from the Summer Immersion Program (LITE), aimed to provide an enriching experience for high-school and college students in an immersive innovation environment. Our partnerships with leading institutions, such as CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center) and Venture Café Cambridge have been instrumental in enabling our efforts to serve partners, collaborators and customers. With over 25 years as an anchor of Boston’s innovation ecosystem, CIC continues to serve as a platform where organizations like TINS can be born and developed to serve the broader community. A special thanks to Timothy Rowe, founder and CEO of CIC and Nathan Plummer, GM of the Venture Cafe Global Institute and the respective teams for their wholehearted support for TINS.
