Despite the overall economy showing signs of health and no dramatic uptick in overall unemployment this past year, things have seemed worse, especially given the increase we've seen at TAO in job board traffic and the number of folks reaching out to say they are looking. And I am not even talking about former Nike and Intel employees. In an article for Business Insider (see https://lnkd.in/gsRhUbur), Aki Ito offers data that supports these anecdotal observations. Tech has been particularly hard hit. Hiring is down across multiple roles: --27% in IT --32% in QA --23% in Product Management --25% in Program and Project Management --26% in Engineering According to the article, we are in a "white collar recession". Factors include: --Over-hiring by tech companies during the early years of the pandemic --Churn is down (employees are staying put and prioritizing stability) --AI may be playing a role (especially in coding; Google stated recently that 40% of its code is now generated by AI) Some potential bright spots on the horizon: --CompTIA's research shows that tech companies started the year with 144,000 new tech roles posted, which rebounded to 223,000 and is now approaching the pre-pandemic level of 322,000 new jobs. --The Fed is projected to make a couple of more interest rate cuts heading into the new year, which should encourage more hiring by employers If you are a tech employer, do you plan to increase hiring in 2025? At the Technology Association of Oregon we will continue to highlight companies and organizations that are hiring, and we are planning a traditional hiring event in the early part of the year in partnership with area workforce boards and others.
