Today, we honor the vital fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—areas that are shaping our future and offering countless career opportunities for the next generation of innovators. At Tech Sassy Girlz, we are committed to empowering young girls by providing mentorship, career readiness, and entrepreneurial opportunities in STEM. Our goal is to inspire and equip the future workforce, one young girl at a time. Despite progress, women still make up only about one-third of the STEM workforce, underscoring the need for continued efforts to bridge the gender gap. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and #WomanCrushWednesday, we wanted to highlight this phenomenal Hispanic woman in STEM– Dr. Maria A. Blasco. Dr. Blasco is a leading molecular biologist from Spain, and not only is she a champion for scientific discovery, but she also promotes gender equality in STEM. She is a world-renowned expert in telomeres and telomerase– the “caps” on chromosomes that play a role in aging and cancer, and has published more than 200 scientific articles. Though, her influence goes well beyond the laboratory. As director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, she actively champions for women in science, urging for reforms that will empower them to take on leadership roles in research. Hispanic women currently represent less than 7% of the 30% of women in STEM careers. However, trailblazers like Dr. Maria Blasco are inspiring the next generation of young girls interested in STEM, helping to combat the intimidation that often arises from underrepresentation. What an impactful summer it was! The 2024 Pearling Ceremony was truly a moment to remember, filled with positivity and celebration of the hard work and projects of these incredible girls. 32 talented young ladies spent 4 weeks in our Pearls in Tech Accelerator, diving into coding, creating websites, AI Chatbots, and exploring the world of STEM. A total of $38,400 in stipends was awarded to recognize their dedication. We're so proud of their growth and determination. A huge thank you to our sponsors - CareerSource Central Florida, Orange County Government, Seminole County Government, the NBA Foundation, Infosys, the Orlando Magic, Electronic Arts (EA), Valencia College, the Aeras Foundation, the University of Central Florida, and AceApplications, LLC - for their support in empowering these girls to power the world of STEM. Our founder and CEO, Dr. Laine Powell recently joined a conversation with the Central Florida Public Media Radio Engage, featuring Orange County Public Schools students Diondria Daley and Trinity Lozano—two talented repeat participants of our Pearls In Tech Accelerator program. Throughout the interview, they explored the mission behind Tech Sassy Girlz, why it is still so relevant and important today, and the students’ shared thoughts on their personal journeys within the organization. To quote Trinity Lozano, when asked how Tech Sassy Girlz has impacted her, she stated “Over the years, I have gained a lot of opportunities through Tech Sassy, and it has actually shaped what I want to be and what I want to do with my future. I want to be a teacher! Specifically in science or technology… I want to be someone who can help more girls get into those fields.” We are immensely proud of Diondria and Trinity for embodying the true spirit of Tech Sassy Girlz.
