With the productive compromise reached in the City Council committees yesterday on the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity, New York is on its way to a legitimate policy breakthrough that will benefit our entire city. It will also help attract, support, and retain the very best tech talent in the country — in turn, bringing more dynamic tech companies here as a result. We thank City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Land Use Committee Chair Rafael Salamanca Jr., Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, Department of City Planning Director Dan Garodnick, and all the pro-housing advocates. Our thanks as well to Governor Kathy Hochul for offering funding to get this deal done. Read our full statement on the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity agreement:?https://lnkd.in/g78v586t

A new VC Spotlight just dropped featuring Nate Loewentheil, Founder & Managing Partner of Commonweal Ventures. Commonweal Ventures invests in early-stage tech founders in sectors positioned to capitalize on government commitments. They invest in sectors like clean energy, financial services, and real estate. We caught up with Nate to discuss his career, why he founded Commonweal Ventures, and why partnering with the government can be, in his words, powerful. More ?? https://lnkd.in/gCxfQbUD
Thanks Tech:NYC for the thoughtful questions and the spotlight! Link in comments. Excerpt below. Elan Kane, Julie Samuels. Q: You launched Commonweal Ventures in 2021. What was the catalyst for doing so? A: "...Partnerships with government can be powerful. Governments have unique attributes: they control proprietary data; they have special institutions like the military, intelligence agencies, and national laboratories; they have the unique power to police, tax, and regulate; and they have a differentiated time horizon and risk profile. I launched Commonweal Ventures because I saw a gap in the market among VCs who are typically skeptical of government. I believe partnership with government can be a critical unlock for early-stage technology companies and our job at Commonweal is to help companies build those partnerships."

?? Tech:NYC and Visible Hands are thrilled to introduce the inaugural SEEN 50 cohort — 50 underrepresented founders leading NYC-based startups and shaping the future of tech! Special thanks to our partner, New York City Economic Development Corporation, and our sponsors, EY and Rho, for helping bring this initiative to life. Together, we’re working to drive inclusivity and support dynamic tech founders in NYC. ?? Here’s why SEEN matters: Black and Hispanic workers represent ~20% of NYC's tech workforce — double the rate in San Francisco and Boston combined. Yet, in 2023, only 19% of NYC’s VC funding went to female-founded companies, while Black and Latinx founders each received just 2.9%. We have more work to do, and SEEN is here to make it happen. ?? Join us on November 20 for the SEEN Summit in Manhattan. This half-day event will empower founders with workshops and connections to the VC firms and networks they need to grow and thrive. “Ensuring that all entrepreneurs have equal access to capital is absolutely essential to building the most vibrant tech ecosystem in the world.” – Julie Samuels, Tech:NYC More ?? https://lnkd.in/eC65gSZK And learn more about the SEEN Summit and the SEEN 50: https://lnkd.in/eTUhGQEH #TechNYC #SEEN50 #InclusiveTech #NYCEDC #DiversityInTech #NYCStartups #VisibleHands Adriana Catalina Vázquez Ortiz Aleksandra Medina Alex Sambvani Anna Berger Anna Hu Artin Ali Perse Bella Baidak Bomee Jung Busayo Ogunsanya, CPA MST Carlos Barreto Cierra Gross, MHR Constanza Gomez Courtney Cardin David Cortez Deepak Shrivastava Derek E. Another SOMOS in the books!?? While this year's was unique, it was an honor to bring together such talented founders (Yami Payano, Nikolas Kelly, and Stephanie Grayson), ecosystem builders (Samantha Rodriguez, Hector Jirau, Ph.D., and Jennifer Montalvo), alongside Assemblywoman Yudelka Tapia, diving into real conversations about the Latino founder experience. Our annual Tech 'Tinis was our biggest SOMOS happy hour to date! Huge thanks to everyone who made this possible. ?? Bryan Lozano
