A recent ProPublica investigation reveals a troubling reality: thousands of civil rights complaints related to disability, gender, and race discrimination have gone unresolved for years. The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is overwhelmed—what does that mean for students who need protection now? At Tech Kids Unlimited, we know that systemic change starts with awareness and advocacy. This article sheds light on the urgent need for stronger enforcement of student rights - especially those at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities. For nearly 50 years, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has shaped special education in the U.S. We have to wonder - as classrooms evolve, is this law keeping up? For example, are IEPs empowering students, or are they bogged down by bureaucracy? What changes could make IDEA work better for neurodivergent youth today? At Tech Kids Unlimited, we believe all students deserve an education system that recognizes their strengths, not just their challenges. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/gxkfDtn7

Last week marked the conclusion of the 2024-2025?F.Y. Eye and WPP?Nonprofit Co-Lab, a cohort of WPP volunteers collaborating with NYC-based nonprofits and artists to create PSA campaigns. Over the past four months, I’ve had the privilege of working with Rebekah Pagis, Eryck Tait, Pujitha Kasipuram, and Sammie Jo Concilio to develop a PSA campaign for Tech Kids Unlimited(TKU), an educational nonprofit dedicated to using?technology, computer science thinking, and social-emotional learning to ignite unlimited futures for neurodiverse students. I want to thank our amazing TKU team: Laura Olivieri, Ellen Goldstein, Sofia Wheeler, and Bridget Eujin D. and our impact artist, Shristi Singh, for their unwavering support, passion, and collaboration throughout this journey. I am so proud of the PSA we created. I can't wait to see it come to life in April and spark positive change in the NYC community and beyond! I’m grateful for the opportunity to support initiatives that blend creativity with purpose and to be part of a project that empowers the next generation of innovators. ?? #NonprofitCollaboration #PSACampaign #Neurodiversity

David Solano’s journey as a basketball coach represents perseverance through the stigma of disability in sports. He experienced rejection 13 times, and finally, his team went undefeated and won a state title. Through Solano’s No Limit Hoops, he’s creating opportunities for young athletes who might otherwise be overlooked. His story is a reminder that leadership, skill, and determination are what truly matter—not assumptions about ability. How can we create more opportunities for disabled leaders in sports and beyond? ?? Read more about David’s journey: https://lnkd.in/eeBKwVjC

We’re so proud to be part of a community of 1,078 organizations receiving funding to keep creativity, accessibility, and innovation alive. Huge thanks to the NYC Mayor’s Office and City Council for making this the largest-ever city investment in the program—over $59 million! With this support, we can continue bringing impactful programs to our community, making tech more accessible for neurodiverse youth. Stay tuned for more updates on what’s next! ?? Today, we announced a record-breaking $59.3 million in grants for 1,078 cultural organizations across New York City, distributed through our annual Cultural Development Fund (CDF). The funding — which is awarded annually by Cultural Affairs using a competitive, peer-evaluated grant process — includes $51.9 million from the New York City Mayor’s Office and $7.4 million from members of the New York City Council. The CDF supports a broad range of artistic, cultural, and historic organizations across New York City, helping support good-paying jobs and strengthening the city’s flourishing cultural sector. “This year, we’re rolling out new reforms that will expand investments in low-income communities, we’re bringing back city support for cultural programming that break down barriers to access, we’re increasing support for individual artists, we’re offering greater stability to the groups who rely on our funding to deliver cultural programs for New Yorkers — and we’re doing it all with a record investment from the city, thanks to Mayor Adams and our partners on the City Council. Congratulations to all of this year’s CDF recipients!” – NYC Cultural Affairs Commissioner Laurie Cumbo Learn more at nyc.gov/culture.
