Our analyst, Precious Nwadike, CIPM. , participated in the 4th Peace Anyiam Osigwe Nigeria Digital Content Regulation Conference on November 14-15, 2024, in Lagos. The event, hosted by the NFVCB Nigeria in partnership with the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, brought together industry stakeholders to explore pivotal issues shaping the digital content landscape. Panel session discussion centred on Nigeria's AI regulatory framework, the potential for AI integration in filmmaking, and the need to revise the copyright framework to recognise and protect AI-generated content. Other panel sessions were on, global distribution: what do buyers want in film and video works; cracking the formula of studio and independent film financing; strategies for higher returns and audience impact; balancing creativity and responsibility; etc Seeing industry leaders and stakeholders come together to weigh in on the increasing issues around film and content creation, we look forward to the industry scaling new heights.

Some notable developments include the following: ?Botswana finalises the enactment of its Data Protection Act. ?Namibia continues its effort to finalise its data protection and cybercrimes bills while South Africa, Morocco and Senegal reveal plans to amend their laws. ?DRC, Togo & Congo establish their data protection authorities to oversee the enforcement of their data protection laws. ?Zimbabwe’s regulations on licensing data controllers and appointment of data protection officers became effective. ?Sao Tome and Principe ratified the Malabo Convention while Gabon approved a draft law to ratify the Convention. ?More enforcement actions were seen in Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana. ?Cote d'Ivorie launched the process to develop its National AI Strategy. ?Nigeria introduced the National Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Authority Bill 2024 to the House of Representatives for first reading and ?ECOWAS published the first draft of its revised Supplementary Data Protection Act for stakeholder input.
