Corrine Durrette, the Entrepreneurship Program Director for the The Gray Matter Experience sat down with us to talk about TGME, her work and her experience as a member of TeamWorking by TechNexus. The Gray Matter Experience's mission is in bridging the knowledge and wealth gap in the Black community, and equipping the next generation of changemakers to excel in a global economy. And as a member, TGME has collaborated with other organizations like the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition and Code Your Dreams, who also call TeamWorking home.

I had an amazing time leading NASA Space Apps Chicago in partnership with CIERA - Northwestern University this weekend. Over two days we had hundreds of extremely talented participants solving NASA created problems, and it was especially interesting to see most of these students incorporating AI into real world scenarios. I walked around and tried to talk to everyone and was astonished by the intelligence of the people we had at TeamWorking by TechNexus. I had a lot of people ask me what my motivation is for running this event. I'll start with a quote from Teddy Roosevelt: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.?" This well known quote is terrific on it's own, but it's actually widely taken out of context (often by athletes). Roosevelt delivered this speech called "Citizenship in a Republic" to the elite of France in 1910. The "man in the arena" that Roosevelt spoke of was the common man. One of the broader points of the speech was the importance of normal people trying to make a difference in their communities, even at a small scale. NASA Space Apps Chicago was staffed entirely by volunteers and attended by busy students with other things they could have been doing. I'm honored to have been joined by hundreds of "men and women in the arena" this past weekend in Chicago, as well as hundreds of thousands around the world. Volunteering and being involved in your community is important. Please consider joining us in the arena. #spaceapps #hackathon

We were honored to host the TechWomen workshop at TeamWorking by TechNexus, where the 2024 Chicago cohort of Emerging Leaders prepared to pitch their innovative socioeconomic projects for seed grant funding. These leaders, representing countries across Africa, South & Central Asia, and the Middle East, are part of the U.S. Department of State’s TechWomen initiative, managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The Chicago cohort includes participants from Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe. After completing their four-week program here, they will head to Washington, D.C., for the next phase of their journey. #TechWomen24 #globalimpact
