Return-To-Office (RTO) is often intended to help improve connection—but research shows it can have the opposite effect.??? A recent Harvard Business Review article reveals that RTO policies can potentially decrease productivity and employee satisfaction, and result in companies losing their most tenured employees. Regardless of work modality, leaders must prioritize the following to truly enhance connection: ?? Colleague connection: Collaborative and supportive relationships with coworkers that cultivate inclusion and belonging. ?? Leader connection: Positive relationships between leaders and employees that foster open communication and feedback.? ?? Employer connection: Feeling connected with the company’s mission and values.? ?? Role connection: A clear understanding of one’s job and a strong sense of engagement. Unspoken rules might be silently shaping your workplace culture—even if your organization encourages open communication.??? This is due to "deep rules” — the unspoken, unwritten rules that dictate what can and cannot be said within an organization. A recent article from MITSloan Management Review reveals that even in organizations that are reasonably psychologically safe, there may be some topics that are implicitly “off-limits,” even if there’s no specific rule preventing them from being discussed. Often related to challenging existing power structures, these rules can prevent employees from speaking up about issues like: ?? Compensation ?? Fairness? ?? Transparency? ?? Workplace flexibility? ?? And more Even if there are ways to discuss these topics in a broad sense, deep rules can prevent employees from expressing their true thoughts and opinions about these issues. How can leaders cultivate a culture of continuous learning???? Enhancing team learning is a common objective for today’s leaders. However, employees often lack the time and energy to pursue learning opportunities. A recent article from MITSloan Management Review highlighted the importance of learning agility—treating learning as an ongoing, adaptable process. The authors recommend four key components of learning agility: 1?? Helping employees understand how their learnings and new skills impact their purpose at work. 2?? Cultivating a learning-rich environment that challenges employees and takes them outside their comfort zones. 3?? Asking employees meta-questions to help them self-reflect and increase their awareness of how they best learn. 4?? Prioritizing team learning by encouraging open feedback and free exchange of diverse ideas. - Click here to read the full article: https://lnkd.in/d35nWHE9 If you’re hoping to cultivate learning agility, consider making Teamraderie part of the process. Active listening and feedback are important, but if you want your team to truly feel heard, take action. ?? We absolutely love these insights from Donna Morris about the importance of taking action on feedback. In our latest Leadership Lab event, Donna provided an example of how Walmart takes action on feedback. After listening to customers and employees alike, Walmart implemented “sensory-friendly hours” every day from 8:00 am - 10:00 am across stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. “It's growing revenue, but even more important, it's serving a cohort of customers that never actually went to our stores before because they couldn't put up with frankly, the noise and the visual stimulation that occurred,” explains Donna. Click here to watch the entire conversation: https://lnkd.in/gD4FAJgN #activelistening #feedback #listeningtoemployees #leadershiplab
The practice of listening to employees, at Walmart or any organization, is a critical part of workplace culture. Seeking feedback continuously, whether it’s one-on-one conversations, listening sessions or surveys, drives engagement. Making changes as a result of feedback demonstrates thoughts and perspectives matter. And with tools like generative AI, it has never been easier to analyze large volumes of response data – both qualitative and quantitative. What truly defines a company is what leaders do after they’ve listened. Below are my tips for leaders about taking action on what they've heard. I'd love to hear your thoughts and best practices, too! #TeamWalmart #PeopleLedTechPowered #Listening?
You’ve listened. Now what?
