"Reducing handovers by having the majority of people working inside cross-functional teams with end-to-end responsibility - what we call stream-aligned teams - is key to #fastflow". Restructuring your teams won't magically solve your problems. Yes, organization design matters, but simply shuffling boxes and redrawing lines isn't enough. Real success comes from how your teams actually interact and collaborate. It’s the invisible stuff - how people communicate, coordinate, and make decisions that truly defines whether your structure will succeed or fail. Are you focused on structure alone, or are you paying attention to the interactions and dynamics that drive how your organization really works? That's the challenge worth solving. You did it. You set up an enabling team, to help your organization overcome a specific challenge. You expected it to be a catalyst for growth. Months later, though, that team was still there, bogged down with endless tasks and not freeing up the teams it was meant to support. Sound familiar? Many organizations fall into this trap. They create enabling teams, thinking they’re building a resource to drive progress. Instead, these teams become permanent fixtures - slowly turning into a crutch, not a catalyst. What Happens When Enabling Teams (and Facilitating Interactions) Go Wrong? ?? Enabling teams can easily become long-term support roles, hindering rather than helping. ?? Undefined goals and unclear exit criteria leave these teams stuck in a loop. ?? Instead of empowering others, they drain resources and slow growth. Its goal? To transfer knowledge, build capability, and then step aside. The more effective an enabling team is, the less it’s needed. How Can You Fix This? ? Set clear boundaries and timeframes for each Enabling Team Facilitating interaction mode. ? Define what success looks like and when to step away. ? Measure outcomes, not just the time spent together. Are you measuring success the right way? Facilitating success isn’t about ongoing collaboration, it’s about getting teams to be self-sufficient and independent. If this is a challenge you're facing, let's have a conversation about how to break free from this cycle.

Working in Lean Manufacturing for so long, you can't help but make parallels to how we deliver solutions, whether it's integration, solution development or even sales. Stuff comes in and stuff comes out, just like a production line right? Certainly unplanned downtime (and unplanned work) is bad, changovers are costly and come with ramp up and ramp down time. Utilisation is important, but more so is effectiveness. But this is where the analogy starts to break down... Efficiency and the flow of work in teams is so much more complex than a production line. 'Knowledge work' is never linear, there are many inter-dependencies, points of knowledge transfer, unseen blockages and conflicting priorities (not to mention LinkedIn posts to write!). Three of the best books I have read on optimising efficiency in teams are: Making Work Visible by Dominica DeGrandis (https://amzn.eu/d/hhtu0yF) Team Topologies by Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais (https://amzn.eu/d/eauDNXi) Project to Product by Mik Kersten (https://amzn.eu/d/3ggNuXL) In fact, I might go back and read them again!
